When you create a math item in Mastery Connect, you can select one of the available mathematical scoring methods. The isTrue scoring method checks that the student response is an expression or equality that is true and includes one of the following relational operators:
<, >, <=, >=, or =
For example, if a student's response is 4<5, it is scored as correct. Refer to additional examples below.
Notes:
- isTrue works with decimals, fractions, variables, and percentages.
- isTrue works with trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential expressions.
Create Math Item
Create or edit a math item. Learn more about creating a math formula item, image cloze math formula item, or cloze math formula item.
Enter a question stem in the Compose question field [1]. You can also enter a formula template [2].
Select Method
In the Set correct answer(s) section, enter a point value for the item in the Point(s) text box [1].
Click the Method drop-down menu, and select the isTrue option [2].
Select Additional Options
By default, the isTrue method requires at least 10 significant decimal places for irrational numbers. To allow student responses to be correct using a minimum number of decimal places, enter a value into the Significant decimal places field. For example, if the student response is 1/3 = .33, the isTrue method scores it as incorrect. However, the expression 1/3 = .3333333333 is scored as correct. To allow .33 to be scored as correct, enter 2 into the Significant decimal places field.
Allow Different Separators
By default, student responses may contain a dot as a decimal value separator, and no separator for values over 999. To allow different separators, click the Allow decimal marks checkbox [1].
To specify a decimal separator, click the Decimal separator menu [2], and select the Dot or Comma option.
To specify a type of separator for thousands, click the Thousands separator drop-down menu [3], and select the Dot, Comma, or Space option.
Note: You cannot select the same option for both the Decimal separator and the Thousands separator. For example, you cannot select Dot for both.
Examples
Any student response that uses the same units as the correct answer is scored as correct. Otherwise, it is scored as incorrect.
- A student response of 3=2+1 is scored as correct with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 3x<4x is scored as correct with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 3x+2x=5x is scored as correct with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 3<=10 is scored as correct with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 321 is scored as correct with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 5>9 is scored as incorrect with the isTrue scoring method.
- A student response of 1/3=0.333 is scored as incorrect with the isTrue scoring method, unless the Significant decimal places option is set to a value less than 3.
- A student response of 2,450=2,450 is scored as incorrect with the isTrue scoring method, unless the Thousands separator is set to Comma.
Validate Answers
You can check whether student answers will be scored as correct or incorrect. Enter an answer into the sample answer field [1]. Correct answers receive the full number of points [2].
Incorrect answers receive 0 points.
