I see "hack night" on the schedule. In past years, there has been a hack night for programmers and a "course hack night" for non programmers. Will that continue thIs year?
By the way, I fully expect to see Josh drop out of the ceiling in a tuxedo to "Extreme Ways" by Moby for his keynote.
Note from the Community Team: Please note that we've got two active parallel discussions about Hack Night 2017 underway in this space, so please be sure to read through both, and contribute to either or both where necessary! The related conversation is at https://community.canvaslms.com/thread/17437-hack-night-at-instructurecon
@dhulsey , Atomic Jolt is co-sponsoring Hack Night with Cidi Labs this year.
I don't have much control about who will be dropping from the ceiling, but I would love to know what you (and others) think would make this event AWESOME.
Also, here's some info for now--more to come. Hack Night, InstructureCon17 Tickets, Wed, Jul 26, 2017 at 8:00 PM | Eventbrite
See you in Keystone, CO! Save the date and tell your friends!
Hey, @jacoba_behunin . Thanks! Atomic Jolt had great tshirts last year. Do you work for one of these companies?
Yes! I work for Atomic Jolt--just started about a month ago and LOVE it.
It's so fun to be part of this community! You'll have to stop by and
introduce yourself at the reception and hack night. My daughter is named
Dallas (so is my brother who she is named after) so I like Dallas(es).

I will be sure to find you and say hi, Jacoba!
I'm also hoping to meet you in Keystone!
I hope there is a course hack night!! If anyone is gauging interest, I'm Interested! hah.
Deactivated user, thanks for the feedback. I'm interpreting that you'd like a class--or maybe a piece of hacknight--that focuses on the hacks others could teach you? Is that what you mean?
Thanks,
Jacoba
Hey Jacoba!
Yes! As @dhulsey suggested, a course hack night for non-programmers who are interested would be pretty cool. Not sure how that looks in all actuality. I'd even be down to watch the programmers go to town if there isn't enough interest for the novice level program hack night, but I'm interested none the less.
Great info! Thanks!
At Instcon 2015 they broke the room in half with one side being a programmer/coding side and the other was a course hacks where people could just set up and share what they were doing or answer questions. That was really great.
This is why we all love the OG InstaCon attendee's like @mjennings to give us some insight into years past!
I was there in 2015 as well and it was pretty fun to have us all on the same room and allowed for some overlap here and there.
You bring up an interesting question, @mjennings . Hack Night is booked in Shevano and Red Cloud Peak at the Conference Center this year.
This will be year number seven for me going to the conference and what has evolved into Hack Night has always been one of my favorite, most useful parts of Instructurecon.
We added a Course Hack Night component, I think it was in 2014 to be more inclusive and that seems to be more or less attractive to most people. How would you (not just Matthew, dear readers) like to see the room laid out this year? Do you think developers and course designers and admins should be encouraged to separate or all mix together?
Last year we had table top signs that people could write the topics they are discussing. Some used them and some didn't, which is totally OK. What should we do this year?
One thing I was thinking about was coming up with a series of potential topics and printing them in such a way that they could be hanging on a wall with the intent that people who want to discuss a given topic take that sign and attach it to their table top signage. If we did that, what topics would be good?
I like the room open so one could wonder back and forth. I like the idea of topics or maybe signs for what "experts" are where that way you know where to go with specific questions or to gleam info.
Also @scottdennis , could this info be cross posted or consolidated with the https://community.canvaslms.com/thread/17437-hack-night-at-instructurecon by @jacoba_behunin as it seems like we are all covering the same info but in different places.
@mjennings , unfortunately, the platform doesn't allow us to consolidate two separate discussions. Thanks for providing the link--that will help us direct everyone's attention to the related thread.
I was hoping to lock one and direct people to the other, but in keeping with the organic nature of their generation, and after looking through the conversations, I see value in maintaining both. They are still active for different but related reasons.
So I'm going to "cross-link" as you suggest, and hope for the best.
I like the idea of Topics because many people coming to Hacknight will wear multiple hats. Similar to how Khaki was set up, I think being able to float from group to group would be great.
Many hacks that I'm aware of in Canvas are ones from @James and @kona in the https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-8591-canvancements-canvas-enhancements?sr=search&searchId=d... page.
Personally, our institution is gunning for any way to get custom reporting out of Canvas that we can without going RedShift. Recently discovering that Redshift data has a 2 day latency has caused us to get more creative. Any way we can "hack" to get more info (API calls seem to be the most promising option) I'm sure would garner a lot of attention.
From my experience, limited as it is, the thing that really impressed me was that at the 2014 Instcon, I had a particular thing I wanted to be able to do and a Canvas engineer sat down and helped me write out custom JavaScript that would do the trick. It was an awesome thing and very generous.
Signs with topics sounds good!
Per James, and I'm paraphrasing, the biggest thing that was a help (for a room full of introverts) was having facilitators mingling between the tables and connecting people. So signs are good, but for some people who are a little shy or unsure, having actual people doing some connecting would be hugely appreciated.
Hi Kona,
As an introvert myself I can relate.
Yes, it has seemed useful to have employees or other volunteer hosts circulate and try to connect with or connect newcomers. We circle around the outskirts and try to find people who look like they don't know where to go and may be on the verge of bailing. This year we had 11 slots for employee volunteers to attend and help at hack night and currently we have 26 signed up! That being said, the more volunteer facilitators the better. We will work with the events team to organize table top sign holders, signs, name badges, etc. It sounds like mixed table configuration but with plenty of room and quieter corners is what people want.
Sounds good!
For Hack Night,
Topics as a non-programmer I'd be interested in:
"Non-programmers' hacks for courses"
" How to shamelessly pirate code from others and tweak it for your own Canvas uses"
And lots of userscripts/Canvancement-style stuff!!!!!!!!!!
Lisa
@lstickdo , what is a Canvancement?
Open Educational Resources and Canvas Commons
I always come to Course Hack Night and love talking to those interested in learning more about Open Educational Resources and using Canvas Commons
Hi. We are going to start really using Commons within our school as a way for Faculty to add content to their classes. I would be interested in how others have chosen to use it.
Hi @swinter
Awesome, the Commons rocks! Here are a couple resorces that you will find helpful..........
I hope this helps,
Agent K
I remember that too. It was difficult getting the ball rolling on discussions (potentially my own occasional introvertedishness) I went to the course hack side, didn't have particular questions but was wanting to be available to help others as well as discuss what other institutions were doing for templates, supporting teachers, supporting students, training, etc, etc.
I've just added a discussion but while it's getting approved, here are some details. Thanks @mjennings !
Here's what we have so far:
@dhulsey , does this mean you'll be at InstCon this year?? 🙂
Ah, I must have missed that!
That is so sad! There are a few double bookings that I'm leaving to decide last minute what I want to do. Argh! Why can't we be in 3 places at once?
No joke! Especially since I'm co-presenting with James. Actually that alone should get people to attend our session... we're pretty funny (in an awkward you have to remember that we're married and have kids together kind of way) when set loose together in this type of presenting environment. 🙂
Lol! I am sorry I am going to miss that, Kona. Hopefully, your session will be videoed. That way, I can see it, and you can use it to embarrass the kids years from now.
I literally had your session down as one I can't miss.
I have the same problem. It will probably come down to location & how far I will have to walk that will determine which session I choose. Good seats can be hard to come by so a good seat at the #2 choice is better than sitting on the floor at my 1st choice.
Absolute (and unfortunate) truth.

It is true! I will be presenting with the VP of Product from Turnitin. stefaniesanders, since you mention that, do you know why the schedule on the mobile app and the schedule on the conference website are different? My session does not appear on the mobile app.
