How can I link Canvas data with other datasets stored in other platforms

Hi, Canvas team,

We have encountered a problem. 

We have a dataset including students' names, gender, ethnicity, etc. Then we migrate part of the students' data to Canvas so we have the course information of the students. But the original dataset contains other information which we are also very interested in. How can link the two datasets together?

Hi @JiaqiCheng 

Canvas is a learning management system.  If you are interested in linking Canvas user data with user data from other sources outside of Canvas, you will need to do that in an external data management/analysis system like Tableau.  Canvas does not have tools to merge external data for analysis.

As previously mentioned by @mzimmerman Canvas doesn't typically have a way to integrate datasets from other LMSs regarding ethnicity, etc. We do have the option to import SIS information and .csv files that could include student enrollment information, names, and even gender. But this process generally requires actual importation and not just a linking to an external LMS. In a situation like this, it may be best to speak with your school CSM directly as technically they have the ability to help create custom tools and other processes to meet the needs of your school or district. 

Because of the complexity of the issue, and the concerns for privacy, it would be best if you contacted Canvas Support directly to pinpoint the source of the issue and provide a resolution. This way, we can get you in touch with a CSM and/or look at options with you directly.
