I'm sorry to have to say that I do not have a good answer for you.  What I have always done is just to search on Google key phrases and also looked for widely different writing styles, terminology, etc - not a very technical solution...

I found the Unicheck free version didn't integrate into Canvas even after entering the key and secret. And their web service had such a short page limit for a free account that I couldn't check a single assignment.

Just a quick update. Turnitin acquired Unicheck in 2020.
