Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I"m being asked to upgrade our Canvas LTI integration of Turnitin from 1.0 to 2.0, however, I"m not seeing anything out there for this. How can I upgrade our integration of Turnitin to make sure it's 2.0 version? Sorry if this is out in the community but I did a search and didn't find anything talking up this, only that TII 2.0 is coming out and that 1.0 will stop being support this summer.
Do you have a Turnitin rep you can talk to? That's who we've been getting our best info from lately. In the meantime, I'll tag @dhulsey , the Canvas Community King of Turnitin, to see if he can clarify anything for you.
It sounds like you have a lot of partial information. We've been using the Turnitin API integration and the Turnitin LTI integration, and we will soon be upgrading to the new integration (known as the plagiarism framework, or "plagiarism review") that replaces the API integration (I'm assuming these are the two you're referring to as 1.0 and 2.0). However, last I heard the drop-dead date for the API is not firm yet, and we're not planning to make the switch until the end of the year.
@tdelillo No, because we are not a university, we have numerous universities that we set up and maintain all their online courses and set up/host the Canvas instances. Each university has their own Turnitin account that we integrate into Canvas for them. I also think I'm getting the bigger picture after reading all these great responses, that this TII 2.0 is actually Canvas' Plagiarism Framework and not our normal LTI integration with TII like we currently have. My concern with this is that I'm hearing this Plagiarism Framework doesn't have all the same functionality as the LTI TII integration, plus since each university has their Turnitin, we do not have have access to their Admin username and password, so we may need to rethink this.
Ah. Yes, the LTI and the Plagiarism Framework integration definitely differ in functionality. We plan to keep both, because we have faculty who want the LTI because it includes all Turnitin features, and (more) faculty who want a simplified version. I don't envy you your role as middleman - decisions regarding the different Turnitin integrations have been confusing enough just for one (large) institution
@tdelillo has done a good job of explaining the various incarnations of Turnitin that integrate with Canvas. I can only add that the LTI version offers the full suite of Turnitin tools (grading, Peermark) while the plagiarism framework version is for users who want a similarity report from Turnitin but do not wish to use Turnitin's other features. It is possible to turn on both the LTI version and the plagiarism framework version for faculty to have a choice, but my employer has decided to only use the LTI version to keep things simpler.
Another thing that might cause confusion is that the LTI standard, used by many learning tools, including Turnitin, has gone to version 2: LTI v2: An Introduction | IMS Global Learning Consortium, but that is an upgrade to the LTI standard and not to any particular service that uses the LTI standard, such as Turnitin.
I hope that helps, 82711010bc61080b507960f9af47f13a496158f1cf91ab1f83b37b2a63af3fe2.
Our University recently moved to the new TII integration as well from the old external tool integration. We actually chose to disable most TII features aside from the Plagiarism review functionality so that it limits confusion among our student population.
Here is a screenshot of the TII integration right in the Canvas assignment page. So no more having to create a Canvas assignment then use the external tool to side-load the TII framework and thus be handed over to TII's system. This caused a decent amount of confusion for our students and faculty when they were managing assignments.
We also disabled features such as PeerMark to avoid confusion between courses. This way you don't have faculty grading in PeerMark in one course then in the next course everything is being completed in SpeedGrader. Really we couldn't find a solid reason to keep PeerMark being SpeedGrader is available. So in essence when the originality report is clicked on you get the results and can view and tweak the settings as a faculty, however the PeerMark functionality is disabled and requires the faculty to complete any markups in SpeedGrader. We have found this creates an intuitive user experience for our student body.
Hope this helps to shed some light.
Thank you @taverett ! This is great information.
Hi, Travis,
I'm wondering if your faculty are satisfied with the Canvas speedgrader? I find the grading tools in Feedback Studio much more useful. The ability to have quick marks and to layer the similarity report and the grading features on one screen is grand. I find clicking back and forth quite tedious, as is typing out comments vs using quick marks. I'm wondering if I'm the only one...
The process has one confusing aspect - you have to edit your Turnitin account before you set it up in Canvas:
First, follow the instructions at Creating a Turnitin sub-account - Guides.turnitin.com. I'm pretty sure if you don't do this, you won't be able to set it up. If you don't have access to all of your colleges accounts, you'll have to ask whoever runs them to do this step.
Then, do the instructions at Configuring the framework - Guides.turnitin.com -- if you already did those, you might need to edit your external tool or delete it and recreate (this was the only time I've set up a 'by registration url' tool and it worked).
