Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I am working with someone who has quiz questions with feedback for each possible multiple choice response. These materials are currently in a Word format, and I'd like to import them into Canvas using Respondus. To attempt to do so, I formatted the question like this:
*a) Correct
@ this is the correct answer
b) Wrong
@ this is the wrong answer
c) Maybe
@ this is not correct- it’s possible
This went into Respondus beautifully, and it seemed happy. When I imported it as a QTI file into Canvas, this is what I got:
The question took the first feedback as the correct answer and the last answer as the wrong answer comment.
Is there any way to format or otherwise work with the materials to allow the input of content with feedback per question response?
Kona knows I love a challenge. 😉
The first thing I did was check the Respondus User Guide to make sure how feedback was to be formatted correctly. That manual is my "Bible" and I constantly refer to it, because Respondus can be quite fussy!
Then I set up a question in a Word document and formatted it with feedback options:
I notice mine looks a bit different from yours - - your "b" and "c" answer options have a "1." in front of them and mine do not. I'm wondering if Respondus is reading those differently? Respondus normally reads numbers as questions and letters followed by a period or a right parentheses as answer choices. Could the number in front of the answer choices be throwing things off?
Once I got the question published into Canvas, I went to the quiz and clicked on Edit, then also chose to edit the question and saw that it was set up like this:
All the feedback seemed to be where it was supposed to be. But just to make sure, I decided to test it out. I made a short video showing the results when I previewed the test: Feedback preview.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Also, if you don't have a copy of the Respondus User Guide, it can be found here: Respondus 4.0 Guides . There is a LOT of good information there!
Thanks!
Agreed, great work! This is why you get the Respondus crown and the cape in our office!!
Thank you!
@ejackson ,
In the original, it didn't have the numbers. Apparently, the forums auto-added the 1's in front. I used parentheses rather than periods after the letter choices, but otherwise, my input was identical. I'll correct how it's shown in my question (if I can).
How did you process the question through Respondus? Did you output it as a QTI file then import it into Canvas?
No, I import the questions into Respondus and then use the "Publish" feature to publish it directly into Canvas. You can publish as either a quiz or a question bank..
I made a short video showing you what I do: Publish direct to Canvas
Hope this helps!
Previously, I've struggled to publish directly with our set-up due to the authentication process, but I'll see if I can get it to work this time. I used to use that approach, and it would be nice to do it again.
I think we had some issues with that at first, but we were able to get it straightened out. It works pretty well now. The only issue I have with it (and it's a MAJOR issue to me) is that images don't publish with the questions into Canvas and must be added manually afterward. That is a HUGE headache that I wish would be taken care of. I have fought for that for a long time, but no luck so far. :smileyconfused: Otherwise, the publish feature works well.
Good luck! I hope it works for you!
Oh, that's a deal breaker. It would take more time to embed all the images than it would to add all the feedback manually. The QTI import brings all the images in where they need to be.
Last week I tried using Respondus again to create a QTI export file and import it into Canvas, and actually got it to work this time! The images actually came into Canvas the way they should.(But I'm still keeping a close eye on them. I just don't trust it. 🙂 )
I will make a short video this morning and show you what I did - - when I can. Right now I'm having some recording issues (no sound) and have Tech Services on the way to check out the problem. I'll post again when the problem is resolved.
Elizabeth, When you share, would you be able to tell me if those images had alt tags? I have been able to get images to come over if they don't have the alt tags. But when they do have the alt tags they won't come over into the quiz.
I checked my document file, and am not seeing any alt tags for the images.
Tara, I finally got my sound issue fixed and got the video made! Turned out to be a Windows 10 issue - - ah, technology. 🙂
Here is the video link for how I use Respondus to put tests with images into Canvas: Video
I hope this helps!
I do this all the time using QTI, and I think this video will be helpful to others who are new to it. Unfortunately, what I want to do is upload questions with both images and feedback for each possible response. It sounds like those two things are mutually exclusive. :smileycry:
I just tried the process again, but this time had feedback formatted with the questions. It imported successfully. I tried both General feedback and Incorrect Answer feedback and they both came through.
Here is a little video (I'm having a great time now that they got my sound working again!!): Feedback video
Hope this helps!
This is almost what I need. I'm not looking for general feedback (the correct or incorrect at the bottom of the Quiz question), I'm looking for feedback per response, since the feedback is different depending on which wrong answer is selected. If you see below, I've noted where I want the feedback to show up (versus the auto-import into the general correct and wrong answer comment area):
Now that I'm not sure. That's how it comes through with Respondus, but I haven't seen it come through that way with a QTI import. Maybe ask Canvas Support about this? Someone there may have an answer.
Sorry the information I gave you wasn't what you need. Tried my best....... but things get tricky with quizzes and question banks. Hopefully the quiz modifications help straighten these kinds of things out.
Tara, I did some more testing - - here's another video: Another Test
Thank you - although I really wish I'd been wrong on this one! That's essentially the same testing process I went through on my questions. I'm going to try setting up a direct connection and see if I can get it to work that way, with image. I'm not quitting yet!
Hello @ejackson :
Is there anyway that I can access your video showing adding general feedback using Respondus TestBuilder?
Good morning,
I would be happy to share the video, but I'm having problems finding it! 😞 It's been so long ago, and I had some issues with Screencast, so I'm worried it may be lost. I'll keep looking, and if I find it will be happy to share.

Hi @ejackson ...
I may be totally "off" in this, but it seems to me that the process you've outlined to get images to upload into questions takes a few more steps that what is necessary. In my own testing today, I was able to upload a quiz via Respondus that had an image and also had many feedback options. I tested this with both a standard text file (using Notepad) and also a RTF file (using Wordpad). My reason for using those two instead of MS Word is here: Batch Uploading Quiz Questions with Respondus. Here's a sample question (the bold text is my own and should not be included in the file):
Title: Muppets (this line is optional)
1) Which Muppet is pictured here? [img: "Kermit.jpg" "Kermit"] (The second "Kermit" is supposed to be for the alt text for the image, but it didn't transfer over in my testing from Respondus to Canvas.)
~ Yes, this is Kermit. (The "~" indicates a correct response in general feedback.)
@ No, this is not Kermit. Kermit is green in color. You picked a Muppet who isn't green. (The "@" is for any wrong answer.)
a. Gonzo
@ This is not Kermit. This is his weirdo friend, Gonzo.
*b. Fozzie
@ This isn't Kermit. This is his bear friend, Fozzie.
c. Kermit
@ Yes, this is Kermit the Frog.
d. Miss Piggy
@ No. This is Miss Piggy.
Once I saved the text/RTF file, I created a folder on my computer to store the image of Kermit...giving it the same name as shown in the question, Kermit.jpg. Next, I launched the Respondus software and chose Import Questions. Next, I selected either Plain Text (for the text file) or Rich Text (for the RTF file) depending on the file I was using. I chose my file, and then also selected the folder where the image was stored. After confirming the rest of the settings, the question and image imported into the course as intended.
From the student perspective:
From the instructor perspective:
Now we need to look at where the image of Kermit was actually stored. So, I went to my course "Files", and I saw a new folder there called "Quiz Files". Inside that folder, there was another folder, "qti_import_NNNNN" where "NNNNN" is a five digit number (not sure how the number is generated/determined). The folder is also automatically set to "Hidden. Available with a link." In this folder is my JPG of Kermit.
So, in summary, inserting an image into the question is possible using this method vs. having to export/import. You just need to know where you want to put the image within your question. And, you still might need to move the image around after you've loaded the quiz into Canvas...in case it doesn't look exactly like you'd want it.
I hope this information is of help.
This is fine for importing responses specific to each answer choice. But I want to import GENERAL response for the whole question, regardless of right or wrong.
Even the help documents for Respondus uses "general response" incorrectly, in my opinion. Help documentation clearly indicates using ~ for response to a correct answer, and @ for response to any wrong answer.
One way around this is to put in the exact same text for correct answer and wrong answer.
Current import format:
1. What percentage of the total volume of an idealized soil do we like to see filled with water?
~ This question tested your understanding of objective 1.
a. 16%
b. 24%
*c. 33%
d. 50%
e. 66%
Work-around import format to give learners the SAME RESPONSE, regardless of answer choice:
1. What percentage of the total volume of an idealized soil do we like to see filled with water?
~ This question tested your understanding of objective 1.
@ This question tested your understanding of objective 1.
a. 16%
b. 24%
*c. 33%
d. 50%
e. 66%
Is there a better solution? Is there a secret character code for importing really general "general" feedback?
I'm not sure how many of you have seen this, but I thought that I would share a link to a blog I wrote a while back on https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/admins/blog/2015/12/07/batch-uploading-quiz-questions-with-re... located in the https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/admins?sr=search&searchId=141fac68-6703-4a9c-acae-dec29fdbf66... area of the Community.
I use the Respondus 4.0 User Guide a lot when working with quizzes and question banks. It's basically my "Bible" and in fact is sitting open on my desk right now! 🙂
I refer to that pretty often, too!
