Videos recorded in portrait/landscape appear distorted/stretched when uploaded to Canvas

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 10/21/24.

Description

When a video is recorded in portrait or landscape using the phone camera and uploaded to Studio, the video appears stretched. The same can be seen when uploading the video directly in RCE using media upload.

Expected Behavior

The videos should hold the correct framing.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisite: Studio enabled in your instance and a Canvas course.

  1. Make a portrait video recording using your phone.

  2. Upload the recording under Studio/page using desktop.

  3. Notice that video is distorted and video quality has declined.
