Hi team InstructureCon! I'm excited to attend (this is my first year but I've heard so many great things)! I want to know what it is you want to see and do this year at Hack Night. What have you enjoyed in the past? Or what might you enjoy for the future? It's an open book so far--let's make it great.
Here's what we have so far:
See you there!
Jacoba
Note from the Community Team:Please note that we've got two active parallel discussions about Hack Night 2017 underway in this space, so please be sure to read through both, and contribute to either or both where necessary! The related conversation is atHack night?
Well, I would really like to see both the programming & course hacks like was done at the 2015 Instcon. I missed last year so I don't have a comparison to what happened. I liked having it in the same room because I am much more of a lurker than having specific questions. I like to see what other are asking or trying to solve then see if it is something I can use.
I also enjoyed helping people on the course design side of the room and share some of the things we have done to design our courses.
I will definitely be around mingle through the crowd.
Thanks for this comment, @mjennings . Since this is my first, #instcon, I was just asking @kschneider25 if I could go to #hack night and just be a fly on the wall. I certainly won't have specific questions, but would love to connect with people and learn from people wayyy smarter than me.
@kenneth_rogers , I am far from a programmer, so I was a "fly on the wall" last year at Hack Night--and even though I didn't understand one-tenth of what I saw, I was nevertheless astonished at how much I learned, and even more astonished at how much fun it was. I think respectful lurking will be the order of the evening.
Thanks @kenneth_rogers . I look forward to meeting you at some point during either this, https://community.canvaslms.com/community/instcon/2017/blog/2017/06/14/inserttitleofbriefing?sr=sear..., or one of the many other events during the week.
Also I can help thinking about a possible Casino Night -
That's your one Kenny Rogers joke, Mr. @mjennings . Hope you enjoyed it.
I am Mr. Dadjokes over in the Live Chat area. But I can take them too. There are not many famous Mr. Jennings out there, but I don't mind being associated with this one:
Also apologizes if I overstepped. I am sure you get tired of those.
After 31 years of Kenny Rogers or Mr. Rogers jokes...I can take them. Maybe that's why I have such a mean sense of humor? I have to take out my aggression somewhere?
(Side note...I attended the CanvasLive Party...your dad jokes/puns deserve an award. A handmade award only a dad could appreciate.)
Oh heck, @mjennings , I have made a life-long career out of wise-cracking, and I can take as well as give. I suspect that in my time in the Community, I have managed to smart off to a significant percentage of members, including you. Keep 'em coming!
And, by the way, Master Waylon Jennings has been one of my all time favorite Country singers since his very first release!

I do have to say that I was a little disappointed that they aren't doing another rodeo night this year. I liked the food, I REALLY liked beating @Renee_Carney at the mechanical bull, and I haven't had a good excuse since then to wear my western hat.
For the record, you will be in Colorado, so the geography should be enough excuse for the hat, @scottdennis !
Thats a good point, Dallas.
Same shoes as you! I'll be lurking from the shadows and intently soaking up all the extra brain power I can. Pretty excited!
Yes, please come! Hang out on the walls or the computers. Introverts and extroverts (and those 51% 49% ers) are welcome!
Course hack to go along with the general hack night!! I've been to all the hack nights except last year and as a non-programmer I still got a lot out of it. In 2014 I ended up hanging out with some super cool Instructure engineers and gave them feedback on they had worked on or were working on. In 2015 they had course hack night with regular hack night (just split the room in half) and it was awesome! There was a lot of networking back and forth between the two sides and overall just a great event!
I concur with Kona!
Awesome! I’d like to be a “fly on the wall” as well! Not a programmer per se ... call it a long time aspiration. How can I sign up, and how can I prepare so I can maximize my experience?
That sounds great, please come. I'm gathering RSVPs so that I can make sure
I have an idea of who is coming and what I'll bring for prizes, so please
register and I'll keep you looped in on all the updates as they come.
Looking forward to it!

Oh duh! I totally missed the link! Excuse me and thank you
This will be my first year attending & have high interest in both areas.
I have already RSVP'd & look forward to the information overload while meeting all kinds of new & interesting people!
Hey All,
By way of updates, our fabulous and wise events team will have table top sign holders for 8.5x11 signs. We talked about having some example topics already printed that groups could pick up and claim for their own (I don't think the events team trusts that I would do the printing on nice card stock, which is why I say they are wise). What ideas to you all have for example topics that various tables at hack night might want to discuss. Please add your ideas as comments to this reply.
Thanks,
Scott
For example:
course templates
writing good course objectives
writing good rubrics (alignment)
RCE; Beyond the Basics
Fun and effective embeddable tools
Tips for large classes
Teaching in the lab w/ Canvas
What is in your onboarding course?
All great topics @scottdennis .
I might would add some things for coders or people looking for coding solutions. How about:
CSS customization to add personal style to Canvas
JavaScript tricks super charge your course
API's to speed up your daily tasks
Even some basics like:
What can I do with CSS & JavaScipt?
How could I make Canvas do X?
Thank you! I was thinking about the coders too but couldn't think of specific topics.
Anyone else have ideas?
OER and Open Pedagogy (of course!)
How about:
Alternative uses for Canvas courses
Canvas Data uses
Here are some that would be helpful to us and hopefully others:
API usage
Canvas and Delta-Data (related to REQUESTS specifically)
Big Data Storage Tips and Programming Tips
Canvas Data CLI Tool Updates and Usage
I think at least one "Canvas Data" table would be great. We can spill over or get into the finer details depending on who shows up.
I’ll be at hack night as always to talk about open-source canvas and work on fixing some bugs. Look for the happy fun times open source canvas sign!
If I can't think of anything to do for Hack Night, I will probably just set up a UDOIT help/discussion table like I did last year. I'm also open to help someone else on a project.
Did a resource get made from this event?
Hi Bobby, I have the contact information of all those who attended and participated. I will reach out to them for follow up and see if we can put a resource together. That's a great idea.
Stay tuned for now.
