Once again we were stunned by another kumbayawesome InstructureCon! Fortunately the great sessions, ideas, and connections we made, can live on within our Canvas Community and in the InstructureCon 2016 community space! Remember that you can keep the conversation alive, around each breakout session, by adding comments! This is a great way to connect with the presenters and share thoughts/ideas with other participants.
Please be sure to take that survey that our marketing team sends out, so we can make instcon even better next year. That quantitative feedback is invaluable.
In addition we wanted to have an open discussion where you all can publicly share your qualitative thoughts and feedback about InstructureCon 2016!
Here's some things you might want to talk about: the sessions, the keynotes, the activities, the online schedule, the app, the booths, the venue, opportunities to connect, ideas for the Community Team to improve community interaction and engagement.
Thanks for your help Canvas Community... We ❤️ you!
Onward and upward!
PS... Don't forget to add all those kumbayawesome photos you took, to the Camp Canvas Photo Gallery...

InstructureCon was AMAZING. It was fun, the sessions were very good, the food was good...a conference experience unlike any other. I had a great time, but of course nothing is perfect .
Easy things: Wayyyy more tents and dry places to sit!
The biggest issue with InstructureCon that I had though, is that, for lack of a better term is that it was fairly "ableist". Events/food were in fields or mulch beds which can be challenging for people with mobility issues. Sessions/activities were spread around and it was difficult to get transportation from place to place if needed. I think that this is something that must get better in future years.
Also, in my opinion, the guest pass was an awful bargain, it was a lot of money spent to eat food alone...but when compounded with standing up in the rain it was even worse.
I noticed the lack of accessibility as well. Having people in my family who use wheelchairs has me tuned into access issues. I also noticed that the Keystone staff had to have the lift at the Lodge and Spa repaired in the first day. I wonder if anyone verified that it was in good working order prior to the conference start? These things are notorious for breaking down usually right before they are needed.
The food was good but more variety in healthy options would be very appreciated.
I thought the lift was also hard to find. Maybe we could have been better about signage there.
While it wasn't a wheelchair, pushing a stroller around was definitely a "fun" experience. Especially at the field, and trying to come up the "hill" to the conference area. We were able to hitch a ride on a golf cart a couple times, and the Instructure reps obviously were trying to help and were very nice with trying to find workarounds, but the basic layout and planning really need more thought out next time.
InstructureCon 2016 was informative, thought provoking, and enlightening as usual. I love the new location. It got me to exercise more and network in comfortable and scenic places. The food was great for me as I have several dietary restrictions which were met with ease by the staff. For once, I was not getting sick! The topics were great. Though, several sessions were in rooms that were way to small. In my experience of being the "seasoned conference person, " I have always seen technology sessions be packed. You might want to consider putting them in larger rooms, or contemplate some kind of seat reservation system. Overall, I really enjoyed the conference. The only complaint I have is not getting any real s'mores! Deactivated user
Oooh, I forgot about the lack of s'mores . And there were no camp sing alongs either!
I went to Walmart last year and picked up stuff for s'mores. Maybe having a bunch of people who are drinking in high altitude locations using pointed sticks and flaming marshmallows isn't the best idea?
mouldera I also missed out on the s'mores.
Yes! Lack of S'mores!
The dessert on the first night had s'mores brownies, but no actual s'mores were to be found. 😞
Thanks for your feedback, Annette. I enjoyed seeing you f2f. Regarding the sessions and which ones to go in the bigger rooms vs smaller, someone made the suggestion that we using voting in the community to get a better handle on which sessions are going to be the hottest (there are always a few surprises). Maybe we'll be able to do something along those lines next year.
Overall, I thought InstructureCon was great! I have two specific issues though (and @roush_94 made an EXCELLENT point about mobility challenges in the terrain):
I have to throw out support there for the WiFi issue, the speeds seemed fine, however it really appeared that the access points just couldn't cope with the sheer number of devices. I mean, this is an awesome problem to have, it means a really high attendance, but I too found it difficult to tweet, play with our own instance and spread the #kumbayawesome vibes.
My only comment on this - the internet was a little spotty, but it was WAY better than in Park City, I really think that instructure stepped up their game this year on internet! I also wished all of the product sessions had been in the main room, but now we know!
I agree. when the main hall was packed, the internet wasnt great, but it was still way better than Park City.
Regarding the wifi; one person made a comment that I hadn't considered previously. The community tent was right outside the doors in and out of the keynote hall. Our Internet would periodically tank and then come back up. The comment was to the effect that it doesn't matter how beefy a wifi network is if 1000 people all try to get on the same access point on their phones all at the same time as a session is ending but that if you move away from that one access point you would find the wifi to be more accessible. Maybe this means more wired access for stations close to high traffic areas and designated 'check in back home' friendly zones placed off away from the high traffic? I'm not making excuses but those are two suggestions I'll make for next year.
I found InstCon16 to be well organized and a lot of fun.
A couple things I noticed that could be improved:
The Keystone venue overall was more accessible to those with mobility impairments than the Canyons (fewer hills) however both the lunch location and the final event at the stables were not very accessible. The lunch location with the thick layering of mulch was inaccessible for those using wheelchairs. I'm sure those with other mobility impairments had an issue as well. Having a pathway (you can make them so they are removable) at the stables to the stage and at the lunch venue I'm sure would have been very helpful to those with disabilities. I didn't notice if the Keystone transportation buses had the ability to kneel or had ramps that folded out for those needing a ramp instead of stairs to board the bus.
I suggest finding a few people with mobility impairments, either among your clients or staff, to help inform the conference committee of the best way to allow for a barrier free experience for all attendees.
The more popular sessions; like the Quizzes and Microsoft, were jammed and it was great you guys were able to offer an additional session on those topics, but they were still overcrowded. Maybe have the conference start at noon on Tuesday to allow for the time for the more popular sessions to be on the concurrent session schedule multiple times.
And the wifi was better than last year but still spotty and slow
I agree with Melissa. I thought the conference was well organized and a lot of fun.
I agree with her suggestions about the accessibility/mobility. Having a bad back myself it is difficult for me to walk long distances, and I found the carts and buses very helpful in getting around.
With the rain, I would have liked to have seen more tents at Decatur Field (as well as seating) and at the Stables. Thursday night was especially rainy.
The food was wonderful. The sessions were great. The hotel staff and the Canvas staff were very nice and very helpful.
I agree with Beth that if we could add the shuttle/bus schedule to the app, that would be very helpful. The notifications concerning sessions and Canvas events helpful.
The location itself was very beautiful. The altitude did take a little getting used to. I had a little altitude sickness Monday evening. I did miss the smores this year...
I temporarily had mobility issues last year (wheelchair, then walker) and what Melissa suggested is key: get some people with various mobility issues to try out your venue. I was amazed at the difficulties I had at my own office while my mobility was impaired.
"I suggest finding a few people with mobility impairments, either among your clients or staff, to help inform the conference committee of the best way to allow for a barrier free experience for all attendees."
Plus 100 to that Melissa. thanks for the suggestion.
Great conversation! Overall, fantastic conference and theme! I am a bit biased with my love of camp anyways...
1. Agree about the accessibility/mobility issue for all.
2. Wifi was spotty.
3. Food was fantastic on Tuesday and Thursday night. (can't speak much for Wednesday... )
4. I will highly recommend to everyone next year to come out a day (or more) early and get acclimated to the elevation. I'm so glad I did.
Thinking ahead for next year:
1. Would love to bring the family next year, but the #1 thing stopping me is the guest fee. Way too expensive when I would only have my husband and 2 children join me only for the evening events only.
2. The app was great to have for the first year, but definitely room for improvement. The biggest struggle I had with it was not having the ability to add my own scheduled events beyond the sessions. I had a half dozen meetings scheduled and missed a pretty important one because I was relying on multiple calendars, etc. Also, having notifications would be great and the ENTIRE schedule within the app, not just sessions. Also, having more information about the shuttles within the app would be great too.
3. I was pretty frustrated walking from first choice and finding it was fully booked/closed and then going to the next room and it being fully booked/closed and then it wasn't working trying to figure out a 3rd and I would just end up in a lounge. Would be really nice to have the ability to have overflow rooms with live broadcast feeds for that 1 most popular session during each time.
4. S'mores and guitars! <-- That was the two missing items. (although obviously weather-dependent)
Feedback for Keystone:
1. NICEST Resort employees ever!! Seriously didn't come across a single bad attitude!
2. CME drivers were awesome
3. Check-in was a bit of a clusterf- after hours. Thankful to our CME driver who knew where they were going, because we were sent a couple of different places. Also heard of some bunking with 3 in a condo and only allowed to have 1 key for everyone, yet I was a single in my 1 bedroom condo and given 4 keys. That didn't make sense at all.
4. Did I mention amazing staff?!
For being the first time at Keystone and having to plan remotely, the events and Instructure staff did a fantastic job!! It can only improve, in my opinion!
Great point @BethCrook about coming out a day or more early as the change in altitude kicked my butt for the first 24 hours which made it tough to get around on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning!
I'm posting my response here so it will be grouped with that of my fellow Floridian, dreesd. (Hi, Dale! ) For me, coming from an elevation of 12 feet (no exaggeration), it was helpful to be able to spend a few days in Denver to acclimate, but not everyone has the time to do that. I was surprised that Keystone didn't have a few oxygen bars dotted around the facility. This is something that I've seen in trips to Telluride, Aspen, Vail, and even Leadville, so it's not unusual for high elevation towns in Colorado. I wouldn't expect the oxygen to be supplied gratis, but I think offering it on a cash bar basis (or hey, let people use their drinks tickets for oxygen instead of drinks) might be both possible and welcome.
I would have dropped some money on that service stefaniesanders! I was hurting for awhile!
Same here!
Great idea about the oxygen bars! I would have used this as well. Arriving Monday night was not enough for me; I would have to spend the weekend in Denver like Stefanie in order to handle the elevation.
I actually purchased a small can of oxygen on Monday for $12-13 and it lasted me all week and did help!
@BethCrook , I didn't even know that was a thing! Good to know.
stefaniesanders I saw them for sale in the grocery store at River Run. I had to do a double-take to be certain I was reading it correctly. :smileyconfused:
I totally put a vote out for some Canvas/Instructure branded oxygen bottles next time ;D
Good grief.
I don't drink alcohol, so I would gladly use my tickets on other things. I concur, as a Floridian that 9'k altitude left me out of breath at times.
Having been to Boulder, Park City previously, and to Wyoming just the week before, I was surprised to encounter altitude sickness. It was the dizziness part that bothered me the most. I was fine on Tuesday but it took me roughly 20 hours to acclimate.
I agree snufer on the drink tickets. I wish I could have traded all my drink tickets in on something (extra shirt)!
Opportunities to buy oxygen with drink tickets may just be my favorite suggestion I have yet read.
I definitely agree with @BethCrook about the Keystone staff. They were always very helpful and friendly. Another factor that has influenced my decision to return to this venue on my own time.
This was the second InstructureCon that I have attended and an even better experience than the first! It is apparent the amount of thoughtfulness that goes into planning such an experience for attendees. Two common themes of #instcon16 (from the Keynotes down to fun visuals displayed throughout the venue) were building connections and choosing openness.
I had the wonderful opportunity to present with @ktesterman1 and share our Canvas journey and ideas which continued the conversation about sharing PD resources and established so many wonderful collaborative opportunities in the future! Sharing innovative ideas and collaborating with educators around the world (bringing the knowledge of the room or this case the whole canvas community together) to make an impact on an exponential amount of students not just my own is something I continually strive to achieve. I was moved to see it on display at the conference and has brought me into the Canvas community even more!
Looking forward to #instcon2017
The most important thing to me was the sessions were informative and inspiring. Everyone who worked the event were equally informative and inspiring! It did take a little time to figure out where everything was and how to get there but I ended up renting a bicycle and that ended up being the best way for me to get around (I would feel very comfortable going back to Keystone and knowing where to go now). They Might Be Giants and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were awesome! Best swag ever – Really!
I hate to say this but one of the improvements would be the food choices as I did not have a lot of vegan or veggie options available to me, especially the night at River Run where the only options were Veggie Pot Stickers and Falafel balls (I remember at Park City they had The Farm Restaurant available for more Veggie/Vegan options). It would have been great to have more tables and tents at Decatur field too.
TL/DR summary – It rocked – more food choices for leaf eaters!
Keynotes: The keynotes were inspiring. I was especially intrigued by the idea of moving away from the traditional educational experience to allow students to take what they are learning and apply it to real-world problems. I have heard this concept discussed at several conferences prior to InstructureCon, but I had never heard it articulated in the same manner with so many examples of actual students engaging with the world around them as I did here.
App: The app made a great experience even better. It was wonderful having almost everything right at my fingertips. It would have been nice to have included the food and events section. Those are the only things I did find myself having to bring up a web browser for when I needed to double-check times and locations.
Activities: These kept me engaged both on-the-ground and online.
Sessions: The sessions were very informative. I especially like being able to hear about upcoming changes and learning about new ways to leverage Canvas and/or partner tools.
Venue: The venue was lovely, and I have tons of pictures to prove it. I plan to visit again on my own time to experience more of Keystone and the surrounding area.
Making Connections: It was nice to connect with so many wonderful and helpful people. I was able to spend time with some of my colleagues outside of our normal work environment, meet people who are located at other schools not that far from mine that I probably never would have met otherwise, and finally meet, in-person, some of the wonderful people I have interacted with in the community.
Overall there was entirely too much to do to do everything, but I tried to get in as much as possible.
