I'm trying to see what the discussion checkpoints look like in the Syllabus Course Summary and on the Calendar, but neither of those will load for me in beta in any browser.

@kda106 - I was able to see the Discussion Checkpoints in the Course Summary and Calendar in my test course. I'm still in the middle of testing and fully documenting issues, but it looks like those dates display in those areas (at least for me):

It seems as though when checkpoints are applied to a discussion, neither the discussion nor the replies show up on the very handy Edit Assignment Dates page. When will this be addresed?

Will we be able to use checkpoints with ungraded discussions in the future? 

Also, is there any plan to allow rubrics to autofill the checkpoint grade fields (or even the overall grade field) in speedgrader, or is that off the table? This would probably render us unlikely to use this feature whenever a discussion uses rubrics. It's a bit disappointing because literally all I wanted was for discussions to add another due date to the calendar, but these other features are making it more problematic for us to use. It's like I wanted a simple can opener and instead my husband buys a kitchen multi-tool that I can only use to open 10% of my cans. I mean, the multi-tool is great if it also opens all of my cans. Otherwise, I just want a can opener.

I understand there was likely a massive amount of discussions behind the scenes that made it make sense for these checkpoints to be this robust, and I'm sympathetic to that, but it's still a bit disappointing.

I see what you mean about the discussion w/ checkpoints being removed from Edit Assignment Dates. That's problematic.

Checkpoints not showing in Edit Assignment Dates is known and was listed in the FAQ previously posted. We are planning on adding support for this post production release. 

There's no plan for supporting ungraded discussions with checkpoints currently. The backend architecture of ungraded and graded discussions are very different and it would not be easily supported. 

Rubrics not auto populating the grade was something that was unfortunately discovered late. Myself and my team have been meeting with institutions and are planning on working on this. On the topic, would it be more valuable to have a single rubric or one per checkpoint?

Hi @SamGarza1,

I recognize that your response and question were to @venitk but my preference would be for each checkpoint (initial post and replies to someone else's posts) to be one per checkpoint; however, with the possibility of the same rubric being selected twice (because the wording/scoring used in the rubric could be the same).

I believe this because the expectations (as worded in a rubric) for each checkpoint could either be the same or different.

Edit: They were able to restore my original comment! 🎉 If you're looking for more details, it's in my comment on the Discussions Checkpoints: Beta Update and Next Steps blog.

Here's an extremely consolidated list of what I found:

• Group Discussions Not Created: If you try to create a new group discussion and set checkpoints at the same time, no group discusison will actually be created. The buttons in SpeedGrader also won't work when this happens. If, however, you create a group discussion (no checkpoints), save it, and edit it again to add checkpoints later, that mostly works. Instructure case 11310688.
• Additional Replies Required Overwritten When Using Assign To Button: If you've added checkpoints to a discussion, then use the Assign To button to make adjustments to dates or add differentiation, saving those changes overwrites the Additional Replies Required number. Instructure case 11304071.
• Needs Grading Status Inconsistency: If a student only partially meets requirements for the discussion, there is no needs grading icon in the overall gradebook nor is there the "orange dot" in the drop down menu. The To Do list (for teachers) handles things slightly better, but again, if they haven't met the required number of replies, they don't have a link to grade it. Instructure case 11311206.
• Heading Levels on Discussion Settings: The "edit" page on discussions has a skipped heading level. Most of what looks like headings (Options, Checkpoint Settings, etc.) is not actually designated as a heading. Instructure case 11317051.
• New SpeedGrader Workflow: I'm not going to type my full comments here because it's too long, but the new workflow of using Next/Previous reply buttons takes much more time and additional clicks. I much prefer the current production view of the nicely consolidated list of the selected student's comments with a link to the full discussion if needed. I think this also presents an accessibility issue with screen readers.
  • Please note that this new view also affects the student's view of the discussion. If they select the discussion title from the grades page, they're brought to the full discussion too with a highlight of their initial post but no next/previous buttons.
• Late Status Not Automatically Applied: If one or both of the checkpoints is late, there's no indication in SpeedGrader. Late status is not automatically applied. However, if you have a policy on the gradebook to automatically deduct points and manually change the status to Late, then points will automatically be deducted.
• Extra White Space at Bottom of Discussion in SpeedGrader: It seems like there's an extra container on this page. There's an extra vertical scroll bar and lots of white space at the bottom. Instructure case 11316260.
• Using Rubrics for Grading: You can still enable a rubric to be used for grading (even though SpeedGrader won't let you if checkpoints are enabled). I know this is noted in the FAQ document already, but I'd really love to see this change in the future!
• Shifting Dates After Importing to New Course: Surprisingly, this worked well! If I went to a new course, changed the setting to shift dates based on the new start date, it shifted the checkpoint dates as well (even though these don't appear on the bulk Edit Assignment Dates page)...which is GREAT news!!

• Group discussions not being created is a known issue that we're investigating. It's a tricky one as it doesn't seem to be happening consistently for all users but we are working to resolve it.
• Thank you for sharing your support case numbers. I believe this has been experienced by a few others and our team will be looking into it.
• I'll raise the grade book needs grading status issue with the team. The To Do list not having a link to grade it if a student hasn't met the required number of replies is the expected behavior but it sounds like it's not matching what you would expect. Just to confirm would you expect it to always show? Or only after at least one reply?
• Thank you for reporting this as it is an accessibility issue. I'll make sure this gets ticketed and resolved. 
• I appreciate you sharing your feedback and raising the issue of how students view it. Please feel free to share the lengthier version in a private message through the community or through your CSM.

Adding comments to the Speedgrader workflow.

• Late status: When viewing from the grade book, the late status is supplied, and applied to both the topic reply and extra replies, however, you can't view the actual replies from there, so it's not much help. Opening in Speedgrader clears the status, and there then is no visual cue that the posts were late. 
• Post highlighting: It would be helpful if all posts for the student being graded were highlighted by default, perhaps flagged whether each post was late or not as well. 

Submission date indicator on the discussion is also strange. The instructor is shown the last date for section/person with the last date, even if this is BEFORE the everyone else dates.

This is a great question! Additionally, is this to fix the issue when doing "Copy a Canvas Course", or when you do "Copy To" on individual assignments/discussions, or both?

I will effectively communicate to staff about  the need to reduce accident rates by 20% by applying the following steps.

Step 1:First of all, I will discuss with employees  and  involve them in hazard analysis process , that is,  identifying or expressing what they think might be the most urgent risks to their health and safety  in the work environment.

Step 2: I will use data gotten from employees and also carry out further investigations.  Data collected will be used to make strategic decisions to improve the health and safety  of the work environment. 

Step 3: Employees and all stakeholders will be informed about decisions  or modifications made in form of trainings or seminars. The reasons for decisions made and how it applies to each employee will be communicated.

Step 4: After everyone has a good knowledge about modifications made and its importance, each department will be given responsibilities and expectations required of them in improving the quality of health and safety in the work environment. Furthermore, necessary equipment needed to carry out responsibilities (expectations) will be given and further specified training on how to handle new equipment will be given.

Step 5 :Regular checks/ inspections  will be carried out to encourage and  ensure new modifications are implemented and also get feedback from staff (regarding challenges experienced or suggestions on  the modifications).  

I will ensure I am passionate about health and safety by having low tolerance for careless safety practices through my communications(verbal and non verbal) and actions.

If I set the Course AI translation feature option to 'Disabled - unlocked' at the account level and enable the feature in a course, the options button to select 'Translate text' does not appear in a discussion or announcement in that course. It does work if you set the feature option to Enabled - unlocked at the account level, but it should also work with the setting Disabled - unlocked. Is anyone else experiencing this? I have created a support ticket.

When did you initially report it to Canvas Support and what is its current status?

@dbrace, I have reported it on Thursday 7 November and the last response I got (on Thursday as well) was that it was forwarded to L2. The case number is 11342351.

Just a small thing. When setting the Account Level Default Grading Scheme a very informative message pops up. There is a small type-O in that message. It reads "awhile" and should read "a while."

@sciosciap , @LMacaulay , @anf107 , see if your account has "Migrate assignment group categories" under the Courses feature flag list. I believe that is how this feature is labeled in Canvas accounts' Feature options tab.

I want to make sure I understand the workflow for account grading schemes correctly: once an account grading scheme is enabled, an instructor still needs to enable a course grading scheme in their course site, correct? And they then need to select the account grading scheme from a dropdown list of grading scheme options? This feature does not automatically enable and apply the grading scheme in all subsequently created courses, right?

I see that Speedgrade was delayed until 2025-01-18 for production.  

Is the default grading scale option also delayed? I do not see it in the normal environment - although I do in beta.

For "Assignments: Preserve Group Set During Assignment Copy"

1. Group Sets copy into the destination course, but not the Groups themselves. This happened when doing a full course import and/or individual items using Copy-To. Is that expected for this? 
   
   
2. When doing a full course import (Copy a Canvas Course), Discussions (both graded and ungraded) are not connected to the correct Group Sets. They are all connected to the Canvas "Project Groups" set.
   
   HOWEVER
   
   When doing Copy-To on individual items, both graded and ungraded Discussions WERE connected to the correct Group Sets.

I am also curious about both items you brought up! I was so disappointed to see the groups not copy over. That is definitely the more time consuming part. The discussions part is frustrating too. We have courses that use group discussions for check-ins that lead up to a group assignment. In the course import, this leads to having two different group sets, the correct one and the "project groups" one which is frustrating. Hopefully that gets adjusted soon!
