late penalty with survey/quiz autosubmission

I do graded surveys during lectures and provide a due date and 'available until' date that ends just after class. Students complete the surveys during lecture to get a small amount of class credit. 

The problem is some students leave the quiz open and it submits automatically at the end. This triggers the late penalty that is applied to all assignments. 

I have noticed the same problem with timed quizzes (exams) when students work up to the end. The quiz autosubmits and they get a late penalty. The penalty in Canvas may read as 0.00 days or 0.03 days. 

Aside from reminding students to submit before the deadline (or removing the late penalty), is there a way to prevent the penalty being applied to autosubmissions at the end of allowed time?

Hi @stbarrera,

Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to prevent this automatically.  I have lobbied for auto-submissions to have the due date/time used as submission time instead of when the auto-submission happens (as that could be hours after the deadline), but so far I've had no luck convincing anyone else that this issue is big enough to warrant a change.
