how to rerun a course for the new group of students so that they don't see the previous groups activity?

Dear community,

I am relatively new to Canvas and am trying to make the right decision. We have run the course for a particular group of students and now want a new group to take the course in its entirety. Of course, there are discussion boards and assignments that we'd like to have the previous answers and the new ones separated on both the front and back end.

what would be wiser - duplicate the course or create a group within the existing course?

Hi @bernsm04,

You would almost certainly want to make a fresh copy of the course for the new students to use.  There is another possible approach using sections and enrollment limiting options, but in my opinion as a Canvas admin, creating a new course shell is the way to go.  If you do want info about the other possible option, let me know.

Thank you so much, Chris! That's what I was thinking myself, but wanted to double check in case there is a good solution that I'm not aware due to lack of experience. I would be grateful if you could share the other approach you mentioned. Maybe we could use it in some cases. Thank you again!

@chriscas is correct. Create a new course shell. Then "import" the previously created items into the new shell. When you import, you should do two things: 1) remove the dates, and 2) choose the option to "select" content so you bring over only the items you need. 

DON'T try to reuse your old course shell. That would just give you a huge headache.
