I am an online student and would like to connect to other people in my subject personally is there a chat feature? can I find others' emails from a tab somewhere? I have looked in the inbox on canvas and it only does an email to the WHOLE class or the whole class individually!!!
I would really like to contact my fellow students at the moment with a quiz coming up but done know how!
I also can't seem to show my Sydney student email on my profile - I don't want to add another outside email but would like to have my uni one shown - and can I find other people's uni email?
I just want to connect with my classmates somehow besides the limited discussion boards made available by the lecturer - introduce yourself and that's it.
thank you for any guidance
Michelle
Hello @MichelleGalati ...
You should be able to connect with your classmates inside of Canvas that are taking the same course(s) that you are enrolled in. (You cannot connect with other students/instructors who are not in the same courses you are enrolled in within Canvas.) You can use the Canvas Inbox to send a message to just one classmate...or to a number of classmates. You'll find a who series of written Guides on how to do all of this (and more) by visiting this link:
Student Guide - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
There is also a short video tutorial that you might find useful:
Inbox Overview (All Users) - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
Keep in mind that the Canvas Inbox is not the same as e-mail. It's a messaging tool where you can send messages to your classmates and your instructors. However, you cannot send messages to your friends/family because they are most likely not enrolled in the same courses that you are enrolled in. Similarly, your friends and family cannot e-mail you so that you receive messages from them in the Canvas Inbox. But, all users in Canvas can set up their notification preferences in Canvas so that they get notified via e-mail when messages are received via the Canvas Inbox. Look for the areas on setting up notification preferences in the "Conversations" section.
Hopefully this will be of some help to you. Sing out if you have any other questions for folks here in the Community...thanks!
Hello Chris!
Thank you so much (I feel like I’m technologically impaired sometimes! I really do look around heaps before I ask, run around in circles and feel awful– then it just seems obvious when I ask!)
This is exactly the info I needed – to connect and communicate with people in my classes.
Thank you so much for being so thorough in explaining and for your time, this will help me on going through my degree
Have a great day and I will take you up on ‘singing out’ if I have any more trouble with this after I have read through the info and tried it out. nice to know I can. It's isolating and a bit scary when you need to talk and work things out within a tight timeframe doing an online study course for the first time.
Phew…. Thanks again
kind regards
Michelle
