Hi Moira,
Most often, "access denied" messages mean that the item is not published, or the link is pointing to an item that is actually in a different class (that the student is not enrolled in).

The first thing to do use the "Validate Links..." tool under "Settings" to help determine what is wrong with the pages. SeeHow do I validate links in a course?
If the pages are not published, you can manage that from the "Pages" area of the course menu. Click on "Pages" > "View All Pages" to check the status of all the pages. There's more about setting a front page and managing pages athttps://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12776-4152322017
