An instructor has a group of quizzes that are all out of order. I looked into it for him and found this thread discussing that quizzes by default are ordered by due date then alphabetically. This doesn't seem to be the case in this instance as the due dates are set but the order is still random:
Any ideas on a fix?

Hi @helfco :
There really is no way to re-order the quizzes on the Quizzes Index page, however this can be accomplished by drag-n-drop on the Assignments Index page. See screenshots below...

The organization tip for this, to avoid confusing your students, is to organize all course content under Modules, and then hide the other content areas. Learn how at https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12933-415257079
Once an instructor learns how to structure their courses around Modules, not only will course navigation be simplified for students, but also for teachers. Making it much easier to manage their course content.
Kelley.
Thanks for the reply.
The instructor has re-ordered the quizzes in assignments and in modules, but was wondering about ordering them in quizzes. I'll tell him it's no longer possible and that he can hide the quizzes link in the course navigation. Canvas may want to update the previous thread on the topic as that info no longer applies.
@helfco , I expected, since you are the Canvas admin at your school and have been in the Community almost 5 years, that you already knew all that good stuff! I just had to ignore those assumptions just in case.
Your teacher is off and running if he listens to your advice.

I'm confused--the Quizzes navigation used to work, now it doesn't and the solution is just "hide it from the students"? I and my fellow instructors would like the functionality back to working as designed, can that be done? I build my modules to best facilitate the students' view of the course but I also expect to be able to navigate my courses in the way that's best for me too, which includes a sequential listing of my quizzes. What's the point of having navigation options that don't work?
You're right, Rodney. The quiz function should have a listing order other than random. Hiding the tool is a workaround that isn't ideal. Many students prefer the option of going straight to Quizzes, especially if the modules are crowded with lots of items.
Agreed! I can hide the quizzes tool from students (though my institution now pushes keeping multiple navigation options available), but that's not the issue. The issue is that I want the quizzes in order ... for me! When I go in to moderate a quiz (or 5 or 10), I need to be able to find it/them quickly, and going to quizzes used to be the quickest way to get the job done. Now the quizzes tool has completely lost functionality, and it takes much longer to find and moderate quizzes.
@helfco ,
Perhaps it's a bug that Canvas needs to fix? Have you reported it to Canvas Support? They just put out the February 2020 release, so this may be an unintended consequence.
Thanks! I'm definitely in the "put it in the modules and hide unnecessary links" camp. Less is more in e-learning!

Awesome, thanks!
It would be nice if they could add the option to reverse the chronological order of the quizzes. That way the most recent quiz would show on top of the list and students would not have to scroll.
I am using ungraded surveys for my online classes to have a record of their daily check-in for attendance.
Canvas Support sent me this message a couple of hours ago. I can confirm that in my beta instance, the sorting is fixed.
Hello, We've deployed a fix for this issue in our Beta environment. If all goes well, it will make it to the live Production environment on March 11, 2020. This ticket will remain in an "On-Hold" status until then. Admins and instructors: Feel free to try out the fix if you have time. As a reminder, your normal login should get you into Beta if you simply add ".beta" to your institution's Canvas URL (i.e. "canvas.beta.instructure.com"). Keep in mind that the Beta environment has outbound notifications disabled (it's for testing only). Apologies to any students who are receiving this message; testing in Beta is most often disabled for students at various institutions. However, rest assured that we are working to have this issue addressed soon. We will notify you of any changes to the status of this fix. We appreciate your time and attention - if you have any questions about this message or this fix, please feel free to contact Support. Keep Learning! Support Panda Notifier of Things
The Canvas Deploy Notes (2020-03-11) have this listed as a fixed bug.
The Quizzes index page sorts items by due date, or alphanumerically if no due dates are set.
Explanation: When the New Quizzes feature was moved to the Quizzes page, the sort order was changed to display quizzes by the time created. However, graded surveys still sorted by due date. Canvas code has been updated to sort items according to previous function
I just had a visit from an instructor with this exact issue. The quizzes under the Quizzes tab are random but they are correct under Assignments.
Maybe the release has not fixed the issue? Or maybe we need to wait until tomorrow.
It is now 9/13/2021 and I do not see the option to reorder MY quizzes. I have the navigation hidden from students which is fine but as a previous member above stated I want to order them for MY use.
It is now 3/8/23 and the quizzes on the quiz index/page are still out of order (they are neither sequential nor alphabetical). The release mentioned above apparently did not fix the issue, at least not in all cases. Can something be done to address this?
It is now Sept 2024 and problem STILL exists .... !
