I was previously able to indicate a negative score in the Rubric, but this function seems to have disappeared... is it possible to bring this back?
I want to include/have included item(s) within the rubric to account for did/did not actions that will automatically deduct the relevant points when selected in the marking speedgrader book. These are not point-relevant items (like the quality of writing their introduction), but elements associated with the submission. Being able to do this will make things easier for our markers by providing a place to note such deductions without taking points away from quality measures or requiring comments and calculations and offering another place for clarity to students about deductions.
For example,
- Used the required template as provided = 0 points
- Did not use the required template = -1 points
- Submitted signed declaration form = 0 points
- Did not submit declaration form = -1 points
I'd appreciate any advice on this and have attached a screenshot.
Hi @EmilySaurman,
Are you using the current rubrics functionality or enhanced rubrics?
If you are using the current rubrics functionality, I will refer you to the question and responses at https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Question-Forum/Negative-points-on-Rubrics/m-p/558886. In short, it is not possible in a supported way by Canvas but @James put together (in February 2023) some instructions on how to "hack" your way through it.
If you are using enhanced rubrics, I do not have an answer for you but I do not believe it is possible because point values for a criterion (as described in the https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-add-a-rubric-in-a-course-using-Enhanced... support article) are selected by using "up" and "down" arrows and I could not get the "down" arrow to make the number go below "0".
It might be possible by using the API (https://canvas.instructure.com/doc/api/rubrics.html) but I am not familiar this specific API.

Thank you - it seems my Canvas updated to 'enhanced' without requesting it, so it appears I am unable to do the thing. I appreciate your comments.
You are welcome @EmilySaurman. Unless the feature preview for enhanced rubrics has been mandated by your school's Canvas team, you can disable it in each Canvas course. You can refer to these two support articles for help.
