How to differentiate between Classic and New Quizzes

Hi folks,

1. When I create a quiz, Canvas does not ask me to select from New/Classic quiz. Can anyone help me know why?

2. Since I don't get the options of New/Classic quiz how do I know if my quizzes are New or Classic.

3. Can I get GPA option in grading the classic quizzes?

I think may be your admin have not enable the New Quiz feature option that's why you don't have the choice. The new Quiz have a solid rocket icon while the Classic Quiz have an hollow rocket icon. I dont see the GPA option in grading the classic quizzes, may be you can use Rubric.

Good morning, @RasoolBux ...

1. New Quizzes is a Feature Option that has to be enabled by your school's local Canvas administrator.  There are really four options they have available at the admin level:
   • Completely off for everyone.
   • Off for everyone with the option for instructors to enable it on a per course basis.
   • On for everyone with the option for instructors to disable it on a per course basis.
   • Completely on for everyone.
     You'd want to talk with your Canvas admin at your school to learn of when they might be enabling New Quizzes for you and your colleagues.  Each school has a different plan in place, so you'll want to find out what that is for your school.  There is also a timeline document available here in the Community that might be of interest to you: Classic Quiz Sunset Timeline (Subscribe!) - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).
2. More than likely, you are still using Classic Quizzes.  Here are a couple short video tutorials to help you distinguish between the two:

Check this first (You may need to personally enable it.) If you are not automatically prompted to choose a Quiz engine, you can turn the new quizzes version on or off in the following area: 1. Go to Settings/ Feature Options, you will see a place to enable New Quizzes by clicking on the slide button. It will turn from black to green. For some reason, you are being prompted to turn it on in your course now.

If you don't see the option to toggle it on, your administrator likely has it turned off.

It is rather frustrating for most faculty to have two seperate Quiz features with icons that look so similar as well. Evidently, there is a Quiz merge happening next summer (2024). Let's hope that the Canvas powers that be, know enough to create ONE really good quiz feature so we do not have to distinguish between them anymore! I hope they add multiple hot spots to the new Canvas Quiz feature too. Blackboard competitor has it.
