How Can I Turn The Emoji Menu Button OFF?

Please help me out.

This ridiculous emoji button appeared in our assignment comment threads recently, and it's SERIOUSLY getting in the way of typing basic text. getting in the way of typing basic text.

How can I get rid of this? I can't believe that they put this right in the typing field. Idiots.

First...  Anonymous, please be sure that you are following the What are the Instructure Community guidelines? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com) document.  Specifically, please look at the section on "Be cool".

Next, regarding the emojis, that option is something that has been turned on by your school's local Canvas administrator or someone from your school's Online Learning/eLearning team.  It may have been turned on for all courses at your school, or you may have been given the option to turn it on per course.  You would need to inquire about this with folks at your school...as we here in the Community wouldn't have that information available to us.

I hope this information will be of help to you.  Good luck in your conversations with your school's Canvas admin team.

I believe this question was incorrectly marked as solved. The question was not how to turn off the emojis in Assignment Comments tool, but pointing out a serious design flaw in this fun new feature: 

• If you look at the screenshot above, the opaque smiley face menu icon COVERS THE TEXT being written in the assignment comments box. 

We just turned this tool on at our institution and are getting faculty complaints about not being able to see the text they are writing because it is being blocked by the new menu icon. 

Would it be possible to move the menu icon to below the text box, so it does not block content? This seems like an obvious solution.

Hello @aolsonpacheco ...

The original question from @William-27 was how to turn the emoji option off, and so I provided a response that indicated that he would need to reach out to his school's local Canvas administrator...since they are the ones who can ultimately set who can use it in their Canvas environment or not.  So, I tried to answer his question to the best of my ability.

Regarding your question about moving that icon... I cannot do that, as I do not work for Instructure and have no way of changing any of the underlying code for Canvas.  I'm a fellow Canvas user like yourself.  I might suggest either finding an existing Feature Idea or creating a new one:

• How do idea conversations work in the Instructure Community?
• What is the feature development process for Instructure products?
• How do I create a new idea conversation in the Instructure Community?

To address this issue, I needed to consult my Tech Support personnel at the University of Idaho.  By the way, they are great.

You first need to be in the course (Critical step)

On the bottom left, click on Settings

Click on feature options.  That will open a drop down menu.

Click on Emojis in Submission Comments. Turn it off and you will be all set.

It worked for me.
