Extending time on New Quizzes after students have begun the test

I have been using New quizzes in my classroom. I am very familiar with classic quizzes and their features. Such as the feature to extend a students test time WHILE they are take a test. This is when you will click on moderate, then click on the clock, and add time to the test. 

However, in new quizzes, I cannot find this feature. I am very well adept in the accommodations feature. I tried that feature with my students who had already begun the test and they did not receive extra time, probably because the accommodation was not there prior to test being given. This is necessary for specific classes where we go to lunch in the middle of class. Students start a timed test but as a teacher I am not able to pause their time, or extended it once they have logged in. 

Is this a feature that needs to be added, or does Canvas has a work around for New Quizzes

@Stef_retired Yes I am, the reopen feature does not work because the timer has ended for the student. I moderated and added time before the timer ended for the students and it still did not adjust their time. 

My thoughts are it did not adjust for the current attempt that the student was taking, but may be implemented on the next attempt. However, that is not what I need. I need to be able to extend the time of a student if they are currently attempted a test.

Thanks for those details. Unfortunately, I don't have a live course underway where I can experiment with this. My interpretation of the lesson is that an instructor can add time to a student's in-progress attempt or add time as well as an additional attempt allowing more time from the Moderation page, but I am not able to confirm that.

Have you asked Canvas Support to have a look? They might be able to help. If they confirm that this isn't currently existing New Quizzes functionality, at that point the agent will most likely ask you to submit it as an idea conversation (How do I create a new idea conversation in the Canvas Community?).

I am hoping you may be able to offer some clarity with regard to moderating in-progress quizzes, in both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes.

Specifically, I am looking for clarification on available options when it comes to giving a student additional time while their quiz is in-progress i.e. extending the time available for them to complete the quiz while they are actually doing the quiz.

My understanding to date is as follows:

In-Progress Untimed Quiz: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes

An Untimed Quiz is a quiz where no “time limit” is set. Time available for the quiz is determined by Available From and Available Until time/dates.

It is not possible to add additional time to an in-progress quiz by changing the Available Until date. The quiz will auto-submit at the time/date settings in place when the quiz was begun.

"Changing the until date for a published quiz will not alter the auto-submit time for students with in-progress submissions." Once I publish a quiz, how do I make additional changes?

This applies even in a case where you update the quiz settings to create a separate Assign To section for a particular student where you set the extended Available Until time/date.

In-Progress Timed Quiz

A Timed Quiz is a quiz where a “time limit” is set. This is separate from any Available From/Until and Due dates/times.

Classic Quizzes

For a Timed Quiz, I can give additional time to a student during an in-progress quiz by moderating the quiz. Moderating the quiz to extend the time available involves extending the quiz by x minutes from current end time (i.e. from the current Available Until date/time)

A student´s submission will be recorded as late because, due to the time extension, it will be submitted after the set Available Until date/time.

This understanding is based on the following:

"If you give a student extra time during an in-process quiz with a set availability date and time, their submission time will display as occurring later than the selected availability time." Once I publish a timed quiz, how can I give my students extra time?

I have tested this and the system behaves as described above i.e. the student receives a time extension but their submission is recorded as late.

This appears to contradict the following note in relation to Add Extra Time on Attempt.

"Quiz availability dates still apply when moderating a quiz. If the Until date passes when students are taking the quiz with extended time, the quiz auto-submits even if the student's time extension has not expired." Once I publish a timed quiz, how can I give my students extra time?

A colleague has suggested that the above is specific to the Available Until date (not time) and that this provision only applies to cases where a time extension extends the time available across two days.

For example, students have 60 minutes to complete a quiz that is Available From 11.00 1^st June and Available Until 23.59 1^st June. A time extension of 30 minutes is granted to a student who begins the quiz at 23.00 1^st June i.e. time extension runs until 00.29 2^nd June. In this case, the quiz will auto-submit at 23.59 1^st June and the student will receive only 1 minute of additional 30 minutes.

New Quizzes

Timed Quiz with Available From/Until and Due date/times

From testing, it appears that it is not possible to extend the time for an in-progress quiz by moderating the quiz for a particular student and giving them additional time. It appears that the Available Until time/date supersedes any time extension granted during an in-progress quiz.

Timed Quiz with Available From and Due date/times but no Available Until time/date

I have tested this for an in-progress quiz with Available From and Due dates/times, but with no Available Until date/time, and, again, while I moderate to grant additional time, the student does not receive it and the quiz auto-submits at the end of the original time limit.

Timed Quiz with Available From date/time but no Due or Available Until time/date

I have also tested this with no Due Date and no Available Until date and I get the same result – I moderate the in-progress quiz but the student does not receive the additional time.

The below, from two separate Canvas Instructor Guides, appears contradictory.

"Moderation timer settings will not be applied to an assessment attempt that is currently in progress." How do I moderate a student´s assessment attempt in New Quizzes?

"If a student is currently taking the quiz while you are viewing the Moderate Quiz page, you can extend the quiz time as part of their current attempt. You can choose how many minutes to extend the quiz, and whether you want to add those minutes to the current time or the current (scheduled) end time." Once I publish a timed quiz, how can I give my students extra time?

I would be really grateful for any light you might be able to shine on the above.

@johnb  Thank you for your detailed summary, I have experienced the same as what you described in my classes. Which is extremely frustrating in cases such as today, when Canvas' servers were experiencing difficulties and my students told me it took minutes for a single question to load. My work around was to just remove the time limit altogether but that defeats the purpose of having a time limit. 

This needs to be addressed as New Quizzes will become the default program.

TOTALLY agree, this an issue.  I needed to extend time for students after our class got delayed to do a fire alarm.  All their New Quizzes closed because their 45min were up and I was unable to reopen.

This solution worked for me!

If a student is currently taking the quiz while you are viewing the Moderate Quiz page, you can extend the quiz time as part of their current attempt.

For current attempts, the remaining time will display next to a clock icon.

To extend the time on the quiz, click the clock icon.

Note: You can only extend the time for one current quiz attempt at a time.

Sadly this is only in Classics or what I call the functional Quizzes.

I don´t think that this issue has been solved. If I am not mistaken, the solution accepted relates to a Timed Quiz in Classic Quizzes. The issue of awarding additional time to an in-progress quiz in New Quizzes remains.

I agree with @johnb that there isn't currently a solution for New Quizzes. This was mentioned in a recent comment on the community update. Videos on Youtube, even though a year old but unchanged, show that reopening or trying to give additional time do not apply to any attempt in progress, only future attempts or if an attempt has yet to be made,.

I agree.  This is a basic and important feature in classic quizzes and should have been replicated.  I had 9 student laptops shut down mid quiz and was not able to extend their time

As of October 2022, this is still an issue for new quizzes.  I tried it today for my students in new quizzes and it did not work and is a feature that desperately needs to be added for new quizzes with the same functionality as "classic quizzes."

Hello all.  I've been reviewing the New Quizzes tool and the NQ Hub discussion area looking for significant functional gaps that to my knowledge have not been captured in Instructure's Feature Comparison Chart.   For gaps that have yet to be added to the community Idea Conversations, I am trying to add them.  So far, I have not been able to find an idea for New Quizzes that captures the essence of what has been discussed here, so I just submitted this: New Quizzes: Extend time on an in-progress quiz attempt.  Once this idea has been opened, I hope you'll consider voting for it and adding your use cases.  I also want to remind everyone...when you discover an important missing feature in New Quizzes, please post as an idea in addition to any discussion you might have here within the New Quizzes hub, so it gets more visibility.

It truly is sad how unresponsive they are and continue and push what is most likely the least functional quiz product I've worked with in 15 years of eLearning/EdTech support work. It isn't just frustrating to use, lacks basic features the Classic quizzes has, but it takes 100's of more clicks to accomplish anything.
