Hi everyone,
Is there a way to download all student responses for an assignment in New Quizzes?
We use student work and responses for our annual assessment review. This year, a lot of our assignments, quizzes, and exams have been built using New Quizzes. In order to gather the data necessary for evaluating whether our classes are meeting our program learning goals, we need to be able to download the student responses for review and analysis.
A summary page is not sufficient for these reviews, as independent reviewers must be able to read and score the students' written responses.
Thanks!
Thank you for this reply. You can download a report this would include
Would you share a screenshot of where we click to download the csv file?
Hi. I don't think this is a solution. The question was, Can all the individual responses--not summary statistics--be downloaded to a file? [Yes? No?]
The solution doesn't show how to download a report as .csv 😞
What about the csv file where we get statistics on each answer choice? Is that available in New Quizzes?
Reviewing the data in Canvas is great. However, why is there not a way to download the data to Excel? This was available in the old quizzes. Additionally, we were "encouraged" to switch to the new quizzes. Then to find out that there is no download feature. Quiz and Survey data is used for ABET outcomes and "viewing" the data is not sufficient. Please provide as soon as possible.
I agree. This is ridiculous! New Quizzes is terrible! Don't use it! I used it this week and just discovered I can't download student responses. NEVER AGAIN!
Hello,
Just another frustrated user who would also like this same feature to be available in New Quizzes.
Good morning, @randers ...
I think the forum would be more satisfactory if there were a willingness to be forthright in answering questions. Oftentimes the real "answer" is "No. Canvas can't do that." But there seems to be a reluctance to admit that.
We may need to "agree to disagree". At least in my own experience as a fellow Community member and Canvas Coach, when I answer questions in this forum and the answer is "no", I try to be as transparent about that answer as possible. And, if the answer is "no", if there are alternative ways (although sometimes not the most ideal or efficient) something can be accomplished, I'll try and provide that information in my response. I know that many other folks here in the Community do this as well.
and sometimes the question is even declared "solved" when it isn't. I don't think that practice helps anyone.
One of the nice things about the "Accept as Solution" button is that multiple responses can be marked as a solution. In the previous version of the Community (pre- Summer 2000), it only allowed one response to be marked as "Correct". So, in the current Community interface, more than one response can be marked as a solution ... if people think that those responses help to answer the question. Of course, a response may have been mistakenly marked as a solution. If you find this is the case, you should be able remove the green border around the response. To do this, in the upper right corner of the person's response, you'll find a three-dot kebab icon. A series of menu options will appear when you click on/hover over that icon. Find the option for "Not the Solution". This will remove the green border around the person's response.
I hope this helps to clarify things a bit for you. Let Community members know if you have any questions about this...thanks!
Well I appreciate your response, but the original question was "Is there a way to download all student responses for an assignment in New Quizzes? . . . We use student work and responses for our annual assessment review. [W]e need to be able to download the student responses for review and analysis. . . . A SUMMARY PAGE IS NOT SUFFICIENT . . ." and the "answer" explained how to access a summary page:
Thank you for this reply. You can download a report this would include
At this point as far as I can tell, the answer is no: While new quizzes allows you to see a summary page, you cannot download a data set containing each student's un-summarized responses.
@randers ...
As I mentioned in my first response, if you feel that the reply from @igustafson isn't the solution to the original question, you're more than welcome to choose that "Not the Solution" option.
You've probably already explored this screen, but just in case others may have not, there is this Guide:
How do I view reports for a quiz in New Quizzes? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
However, that might not be the information you or others are looking for.
I'm not sure if you've seen this, but recently the Feature Ideas space here in the Community was re-branded to Ideas and Themes. I searched the Ideas and Themes space a bit, and I found the following for you:
Within this theme, under the section called "Referenced Ideas", there is a link to:
I would encourage you to follow these links and participate in the conversations. You can read more about the Ideas and Themes process at this link:
Hope this helps a bit.
1. But, why not? Why is there no way to do this?
2. Why has this been going on for years?
3. Yes, I am posting in an old thread, but this is an old problem, amirite?
4. Why, in the name of all that is holy, would instructure or whomever take away our ability to use Classic Quizzes and replace it with something that doesn't do what it seems like many of us need it to do? Like, I just went on Sakai to get an old csv to copy the formatting. Not fun when you have 463 students in a class.
5. I think the bottom line (other than we want it) is why? This has been a thing for years. I think a reason why would help. I will post on all the links you gave, but as a community coach, I don't think it's your fault.
6. 😭
Also sitting here frustrated and commenting on an old thread. I need to export over quiz 1000 responses quick for my boss. I used new quizzes because canvas promised features that weren't in the classic quizzes. Now I'm finding out that it's the other way around?? How can I explain this to my co-instructors?
Yes. I'm also very frustrated, and very unpleasantly surprised to discover this isn't a feature. Today I learned never to use New Quizzes under any circumstances. Why on earth would they take this feature away? To lock people into being unable to export their data from Canvas, so that schools feel they have no choice but to continue using it?
Agreed. It's been almost four months since I initially commented and almost three years since OP started this thread. We are still not able to export student responses and the Canvas team is only working on collaborative features rather than implementing basic features that allow new quizzes to function.
As an update, I was not able to give my boss or colleagues the results they needed. It's all very disappointing and reflects badly on me as an educator. Goes to show that Canvas doesn't have the best interests of its users in mind when implementing half-finished features.
Yes, this is a very old problem, which even pre-dates Covid when they first introduced New Quizzes as an option. Sadly, the answer is still, after many years, and many, many complaints, never, ever, ever use New Quizzes for anything where the individual question results are needed for assessment. It would be easy for them to address this, but, alas, no. They simply will not do it. God help us all if they actually sunset Classic Quizzes like they threatened to do 2 years ago.
hahaha! I literally just sent that email to my co-instructors. I also had the same thought as you - I was thinking, well I must be missing something major because these are the New Quizzes. I was (still am) pulling my hair out. It's like a secret that everyone knows, but no one tells. This little assessment is a major part of keeping the class as a divisional requirement, and now I have to devise a way to do this by yesterday (20 minutes ago to be exact). I'm completely baffled.
