Download Submissions button missing

My students submitted an essay on the google doc external tool. When I click into the assignment there is not a "download submissions" button.  It is not there in the grade book either.  I noticed it is there for the assignments that they upload a picture but not for this essay assignment.  Is there something I did wrong while creating this assignment?  (This assignment was imported from a previous course).  Is there something I can do to change the current assignment so I can download all of the submissions?

Howdy,

Generally, with external tool assignments, you aren't going to be able to download the submissions because the files aren't actually in Canvas.

If you do a file upload type, the files actually live in Canvas, which will allow for the bulk download option.

I had the same problem and discovered that the assignment had been set to "No Submission". Toggling back to "Online" fixed the problem.
