Do PDF assignment uploads need to be PDF/A-1a:2005 compliant in order for images to display correctly in Canvas and Speedgrader?

We have a student who has submitted their dissertation as a PDF upload in line with the assignment instructions from the tutor, however when they view this in Canvas the calculations and figures in the images appear corrupted. When they download the PDF and view it everything is fine. This has happened to others previously as well.

Is this something to do with the PDF not being saved with the "create PDF/A-1a:2005 compliant file" option ticked? This option is not ticked by default at our institution and you have to navigate to the options panel to activate it.

My understanding is that by ticking this, it makes PDFs more resilient to long term archiving and preservation as it includes all the necessary information to ensure the document can be rendered properly regardless of software changes/updates etc. and embeds fonts, colours and other elements which might cause rendering issues.

I'm wondering if ticking this would make the images display correctly when viewed from within Canvas.

Thanks 🙂
