Course calendar showing events over two iterations of the same course, even when only one course selected

At our institution we use number codes to identify courses, and the same course can have a code beginning with the same number over several semesters. The trailing digits vary by section, semester, and year, however.

Recently I had an issue when adding appointment groups to the course calendar for an instructor, where those appointment groups for both spring and summer versions of the course showed up in the calendar, for a course being taught both semesters back-to-back. This happened even though only the summer course or only the spring course was selected in the calendar. In addition, the calendar would show appointment groups created as part of the spring course as if they were part of the summer course, and vice versa, as part of the summer course even though they were created in the spring course. Unfortunately, this led to an issue where appointment groups for the course being taught in the current spring semester were deleted, in an attempt to clean up the course after course content for the summer course was imported.

I do understand that the calendar shows all assignments for all courses based on due dates, but this seems like an error, considering that it was showing appointment groups for a course that has a similar name but is totally separate over two semesters, and that only one course was selected at a time. I brought up the number coding because that would be the only way that I can see that Canvas would have put those appointment groups together. Is there a solution that would prevent this particular instance of viewing calendar items from the similarly named courses from occurring?
