My faculty would like to cross-list course sections with different start dates. For example, we offer four sections of a course this semester all with different start dates (end date is the same). Is it possible to cross-list these sections in Canvas?
Solved! Go to Solution.
You can cross-list the sections into the same course as long as they all have the same term. You can still set individual start and end dates on the sections by going into the section settings and adding different start and end dates, as long as you check the "Restrict students...." options in the section settings.
See this article for more information about term, course, and section dates: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Basics-Guide/How-do-term-dates-course-dates-and-section-da...

Hi @SilasHanneman In our Faculty we have a number of colleagues who prefer to manage all their Major Project / Dissertation students for the year in a single Canvas site. The complexity has to be handled somewhere - one colleagues has full time and part time cohorts in the same site - so that's six cohorts and eighteen assignments per year (there isn't currently a solution that would give each the same assignments, so these must be duplicated).
Contrary to @mzimmerman 's experience, we are crosslisting sections / cohorts which are in different terms.
However, we draw the line (in all but one case) of running crosslists into the followin academic year (except where the delivery started in the previous academic year).
The important point (also covered elsewhere) is that your SYS generates assessment lines specific to sections/cohorts, and that any comms, activity etc is set to specific sections (even if all of them).
The assumption is that all members of the site have the same materials so pages are not capable of being set to section - in this case use discussion or assignment pages which do have section capability/
Hope that helps
