I have students complete short open-book quizzes each week. They either earn full points (2 points) or no points as part of a homework grade. To earn full points, they must get a certain number correct (e.g., 75%) and complete the quiz by the deadline. I had hoped to find a way to automate the points translation (2 points or 0 points), but I've been told that's not possible.
I received a workaround suggestion to create a simple rubric with one criterion and either 2 points or 0 points and then go through each quiz applying the rubric. Ultimately, I'm not sure it's worth the time (versus just exporting the gradebook and modifying in Excel), but I thought I'd try it since I'd like students to be able to see their actual homework point totals in Canvas. So, I set up a rubric and tried it out on a test student. But the gradebook still shows the quiz score based on questions correct rather than the rubric score.
What do I need to do to have the rubric feed the gradebook? (Note: I do want students to still be able to see how many questions they missed in the quiz.)
Also, is there a better way to achieve my goal?
Thanks!
@JodiWilson ...
As you may have seen, when attaching a rubric to a Classic Quiz in Canvas, there is no option to "Use rubric for assignment grading" like there is with a normal Canvas assignment. This means that there is no real "connection" between the received score a student gets on a quiz and the rubric you have attached to the quiz to use for grading. In my option, although I've had situations where I used to work where instructors attached a rubric to a quiz, it wasn't the most ideal for the students. For example, you could have a 10-point quiz, but then you might have criteria that is more or less points that the actual points possible of the quiz...and again, there is no "connection" between the two. You are correct that the Gradebook will show the score the students received on the quiz questions...not the rubric.
Thanks! So is there any way to achieve my goal of having the gradebook accurately reflect their participation points (based on timely completion and a score of X or better) rather than their quiz score? Or am I stuck manually adjusting and assuring students I'll make the adjustment?
@JodiWilson ...
I am not sure how many quizzes you plan on having in your course, but one option would be to create some separate "participation" assignments worth 2 points. You may need to have an additional assignment for each quiz in your course...each worth 2 points. But, this would double the size of your gradebook, and I'm not sure if this is the most ideal for what you're wanting to accomplish.
I'm hopeful that others here in the Community with more teaching experience that I have (I was a former Canvas administrator) might have some other solutions for you.
