Assessing True Progress: Allowing Green Checkmarks beyond assignments/tests

For modules, the green checkmark only shows up when submitting assignments (on those pages).

It would be useful to show the green checkmark when reading assignments or non-assignments or assessments are done. When the student clicks "next" to go to the next "page" of reading, a green checkmark should mark that section "done." This helps a student

  • Feel they are moving forward
  • Understand where they left off
  • See how much of a module or chapter is left to complete (reading assignments, videos, etc.)
  • And helps with overall user experience and information required to navigate the system.

Right now, even for heavy-reading or video assignments,. it still shows 0% on dashboard just because I haven't taken a formative test or quiz.... and this is not accurate, I've already completed almost all of chapter or module 1 (of 12) as far as completing assignments, watching videos, etc. And it still shows 0%.

In online environments and in digital learning, progress bars help busy students understand and make decisions as well as take off any anxieties about where they left off. I recommend this as a feature (change the color if need be) but add a check-mark or "completed" visual cue to help students understand and move forward. I think this will help reduce any cognitive burden and you'll see less drop-outs.

You can add Module Requirements set to View Items as the criteria, so students will see a green checkmark after each item in the module has been viewed. More information about the different Module Requirements can be found in the following guide:

https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-add-requirements-to-a-module/ta-p/1131

Here is a guide that shows how this participation is viewed from the student's perspective:

https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-view-Modules-as-a-student/ta-p/433

These Module Requirements, however, do not impact the student’s overall grade. You might need to set up a graded assignment at the end of each module for this to occur. Could be as simple as a one-question quiz at the end of each module as a comprehension check.

Hope this helps!

Hi @EG79

I think you are a student, correct?

Canvas does have a feature (Requirements) where a designer/teacher of a course could add that to pages, and students can then acknowledge they have reading the page.   for students to click a "Done" on a page they have read -- but the teacher would have to design their course using that feature.   This can be set to be more restrictive (you can't move on to the next item until you click that Done button) or less restrictive.  One drawback is that sometimes students don't notice or don't take the time to click that Done button, and then it won't appear done.

But this is a feature that can be used in Canvas, if the teacher/designer decides to use it in their course.

If the teacher has the Grades link active in your course menu, this is another feature you can use to monitor your progress in the course.  Here you can see all assignments, what's missing, what might be late, your scores, and access to view any feedback provided.

Hope this helps!
