Adding people on Canvas Shell

I am trying to add a participant on a canvas shell and this message pops up: "The email address provided conflicts with an existing user's email that is awaiting verification." as shown in the attached image. How do I resolve this to enable me to add the participant to the shell?

It looks like you are a Canvas administrator, correct?  Have you tried going to the "People" page on your admin side to search for that e-mail address to see if multiple users have that same e-mail address assigned to their profile?
