Are emails required for student login or can schools use usernames?

We are a digital platform able to synch roster and import those accounts using emails. One schools says they only use usernames for their students but we are not seeing how we import those from canvas. My tech says: "The alphanumeric login ids are the encrypted form of user name. So, if we create account with those login id, that would not be the correct import. In this way, those students cannot be imported to fathom system."
