AI should assist in the productivity of software development or it should be ruled out
Yes, it should definitely assist and should NOT be ruled out.
Microsoft Visual Studio is a production grade AI-assisted Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is one example https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/ide/ai-assisted-development-visual-studio?view=vs-202... I believe AI-assisted software dev. is the future. The recent tech giants lay offs (about %6 so far) of their software engineers "mostly" due to AI is a testament to my reasoning. This number will increase as AI-based software dev. tools gets better.
Take a look at Bolt https://bolt.new/ for instance, to get a sense of the role of AI is plying in software dev. It can build an entire full-stack software within the browser.
I feel that we should use everything we have access to. Everything is helpful if used in the right manor.
I agree with you Erik. We should consider everything that is helpful, however, we need to be cautious about the computational cost (cloud) for training AI/ML models as well as the expertise cost to build/customize the technology for a given use case.
