 @hsargent , as someone who has content in Commons that I know people have downloaded and are using (because they've told me), I can say that no, there is no notification or way to tell if someone has viewed or downloaded your content in Commons. [Side note, I really really wish there was though!]

Hi,  @hsargent , there is a feature idea currently being voted upon which envisions a notification for Commons:

Right now the comments on that idea focus on updated content. I'm sure your interest in notification of downloaded content would be useful there (as would your vote!).

I guess what I am wondering is, if something is posted in the commons and I look at somebody's materials should I contact them before doing so? If so, how do I contact them? Or if they make it available on commons are they doing so knowing that it is available to others?

 @hsargent ‌, the beauty of Canvas Commons is that it is truly a shared repository. The author sets the desired visibility and sharing options during the resource upload process--so if something is available to you in Commons, you can freely review and use the materials without contacting the author to ask for permission.

Ah, but what if the person who uploaded content to Commons was unaware or willfully flouting copyright law and used something in their content that THEY do not have permission to use?

When someone uploads something to Commons they are asked who they want to share it with (so they pick Everyone vs. just people at their school) and also set the copyright for the content. If you look there should be an indication of what the copyright is for a specific content item/package.

Thanks all, I am new to using canvas so I wanted to verify the etiquette.  I have one new prep and in searching commons I found similar courses posted and was curious if viewing these materials was ok or not.  The guidance you have provided has been helpful!
