Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I have imported a Quiz from Commons in our district created by a co-teacher. When I import into my course, there are lock symbols where the graphics should be. Other teachers who import the quiz in their courses are seeing the graphics. I have attempted to import the quiz from another computer and the same thing occurs. Why would this be happening?
Good morning, Pam. I shared your question with the Commons Group. I hope they can help you!
Thank you!
Hello there, @pamela_oliver1 ...
I am reviewing older questions here in the Canvas Community, and I came across your question. I wanted to check in with you because I noticed that there hasn't been any new activity in this topic since March 27, 2019. I'm sorry to see that your question appears to be unanswered. You may have stumped the Community with your question. Have you been able to come up with any resolution on your own since you first posted your question back in March? If so, would you be willing to share your solution with us here in this thread? Or, if you are still looking for some help with this question, please come back to this topic to post a note below letting Community members know how we might be able to assist you. For the time being, I am going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered"...not because we've necessarily found a solution for you...but more because we've not had any new activity in this topic for over six months. However, that won't prevent you or others from posting additional questions and/or comments below that are related to this topic. I hope that's alight with you, Pam. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
Generally speaking, a "lock" icon is an indication that the user in question does not have permission to view the image.
This often occurs when content is copied/imported to a new course, but the image is embedded in such a way that it still points to the copy of the image in the original course.
When you see problems like this, the first step I almost always recommend is using the "Validate links" tool (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-validate-links-in-a-course/ta-p/1001 ) which will help you identify resources in a course which are not accessible to students in the course.

Thanks for the quick response! I didn't think of the validation tool as the graphics in question are in the ready-made template. I just assumed they would work. I'll check it out!
If the content is copied from a template, it sounds like the image links may be pointing back to the template and not to the images in the current course.
Looking for the same issue. Bumped into your thread. Thanks for creating it. Looking forward for solution.
Hi Gary,
As mentioned earlier in the thread, the underlying issue is that the student (or Test Student) does no have permission to view the images in question. So, you need to use the Link Validation tool as a first step to figure out why the student doesn't have permission. Is it because the image link in the question is actually pointing to an image file in the previous class? If so, you need to go through and fix all the embedded images in the test.
Validating the links has assisted with the graphics on the home page of the blueprint course (ready made template). I was able to edit the graphics and "replace" them with the same png file from the course resources. However, the simple icons that are built into the ready made template (i.e., ) are still showing as a lock in the student view. I used the same process to replace the graphic but that did not make a difference. I appreciate any and all ideas here!
You say that the icons are "built into" the ready made template. It sounds like there is still some resource that is not being copied over, since I'm not exactly sure how icons were selected and added to the content to begin with. Where exactly did the icons come from when they were being used in the ready made template?
We purchased a ready made template from Canvas and there is a set of icons built into the template (see samples in previous message) and they are also already embedded in different components of the layout. I did upload a different png icon and it appears to display in the student view. I'm just baffled as to why the embedded icons do not work? I can work to replace each of the images but that feels like wasted time when icons already exist.
You will want to figure out where the embedded icon image files are actually stored. If you view the pages in raw HTML where the icons appear, what does the code look like for the icons? (I'm pretty sure it's going to have a path pointing to a specific folder or course that students don't have access to...)
