Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
As more and more high schools come on board in Australia it is becoming an issue that Canvas does not have a native upload of student photographs - all our other systems simply allow us to upload either a zip file or bulk upload of student and staff photos with the SIS ID.
I am aware of scripts etc. developed and working but this core function needs to be added as a high priority. Teachers rely on the photos to ID students.
Also schools do not have the technical expertise to manage third party scripts.
Could I please ask for support for your high school colleagues to use Canvas in an efficient way.
@david_summervi1 , depending on how your school brings users into Canvas, it might be possible for the school's Canvas Admin to link to avatars in the SIS with the Canvas API: Users - Canvas LMS REST API Documentation Have you explored this option with your CSM?
Just to follow up, @david_summervi1 ; have you looked into how this process might be automated for you? It occurs to me that having to upload photos twice, first into an SIS and then again into Canvas, is potentially less efficient than using the API to link directly to the set of existing photos in the SIS so that the avatars in Canvas automatically reflect any changes made to the photo set in the SIS. We're looking forward to your reply.
Thank you for that - the SIS has been reluctant to do this - but I will pass this on..
Cheers
I don't know the background ins and outs, but Indiana University has added a tool called Photo Roster that contains the official university photos of all students enrolled in the course. Only those with "teacher" rights can view the tool. I'm reluctant to provide specific emails without permissions, but it is possible if you were to go to Office of the Vice President for IT and CIO (OVPIT) you could find the name and email of someone in Learning Technologies and ask if they can advise or share.
