I've ended up with student work in two places: Under the "upload a draft" location, and under an "assignment" location. When I work in Speedgrader, some assignments are in one, and some in the other.

Is there a safe way to collate these submissions? I did not have this problem in previous semesters, so I am not sure what's up.  I did not edit the Canvas page to have two locations, so students must be seeing an upload under assignments...

Your students are seeing two different assignments then.  They must be unclear on which one they need to submit to.  There is not a way to merge the two.  You may need to ask some students to resubmit to the real assignment and then delete the one you are not attaching a grade to.

Hi Chris, just a thought I wanted to share with you. If you're not scoring the draft, I have found my faculty like the idea of using the assignment for multiple submissions. Here's how it works:

You assign a paper and want Turnitin to let the student to see an originality report and the grammar checking through the ETS rater (set these in the assignment options). Let's say the assignment is due on the 20th, so in the instructions you tell students to write their paper, name it "DRAFT paper" and submit it by the 10th. Canvas/Turnitin returns the originality report and grammar information. The student edits and renames it "FINAL paper" then returns to the same assignment as before and submits the final paper.

Since the Until date hasn't been reached Canvas allows the second submission. You may or may not choose to review the student's first submission, but in any event you don't assign a score. You grade the second submission, but may choose to compare it with the first submission. The student can only see their second submission. The student has benefit of the Turnitin feedback. You don't have an extra place where submissions may be accidentally made, and there is only the single needed gradebook entry.

Our faculty and students find this workflow easy to understand and manage yet still work within the confines of the Canvas system.
