Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I have a student that has uploaded his assignment into Canvas, and I don't know if there is something I can do to correct the problem or if he did something wrong. I am not able to grade his paper , and I see nothing that will enable me to grade his paper. His paper states "paper view", if I pull down the menu it states "plain text view". There is also nothing at the top of his paper for me to: mark "x's" or write comments. What do I do?

Good evening, @jnave8 ...
It sounds like your student may have submitted the assignment to you via text entry. According to this Guide, annotation tools are not available for text entry submissions: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-17742-41521137387 I'm not sure if you allow re-submissions, but if you do, you might want to ask your student to re-submit the text in a Word document or a PDF file so that you can take advantage of the annotation tools that SpeedGrader has to offer.
I hope this helps, Judith. Sing out if you have any questions about this...thanks!

Chris, he just e-mailed me and stated that is what he did. That is exactly what he said, "I did a text entry and submitted it". I was just sitting here thinking what does that mean, and what do I do now?

Hi @jnave8 ...
Yes, if you are okay with students re-submitting their work to you as a Word document or PDF, that would be the thing to do. Can a student resubmit Canvas assignments? I'm not exactly sure how your assignment is set up, but you'd want to make sure the "Online" option is set up and also that you are allowing for "File Uploads" and not just "Text Entry". How do I add or edit details in an assignment?
I hope this information will be of help to you, Judith.
I have instructed the student to resubmit his assignments via word document or PDF. To do that I have to reopen the "entry box", but I can do that. In fact I have already done that.
Thanks,
