[ARCHIVED] How do I save embedded videos in canvas to my computer when the 'Files' section is not available for my courses?

My courses do not have the 'Files' section, which is where I think I would normally be able to find embedded videos from the Module sections. I've right clicked the videos and 'saved as' onto my computer, but when I try to reopen, it opens in Canvas. After a trimester, my courses are no longer available to me after the following trimester, but I want to be able to continue to have access to the videos. How d I do this?

Did you try starting the video before selecting to "Save As?"  That's the solution suggested in the following thread: Downloading a video from Canvas Rich Content Editor within a Discussion

Kelley, Thank you. I do understand that if it links to somewhere else like youtube, that's different. They are vimeo videos and cannot be opened outside of canvas. I have no options to save this?

Yes, that gives me the same results as when the video is not playing. It downloads the canvas page I'm on with the video instead of just the video.

Hi  @cmetz 

There is a solution, but it will vary slightly depending on the original source of the video.

• For YouTube videos, for example, you will see a right-pointing arrow in the upper right corner - this is the "Share" icon. If you click on that arrow, one of the choices you will have is to download the URL. That URL will take you to the video in YoiuTube.

• For Flikr there is a different icon, but it works very similarly and is located in the same place.

• Some more proprietary sources will not give you this opportunity at all, because their video copyrights only permit their use in your classroom.

Carrie:

Unless your teacher has made her Vimeo site private, Vimeo videos also include a share icon. If memory serves me right (OMG good luck with that) it is also in the upper right. Another trick is that Vimeo, like YouTude will include a link at the bottom that will take you to their web pages, and always land you on the page 2with the video you clicked the link from. I use this all the time to go back and get transcripts.

I just encountered a problem where videos weren't loading within canvas and needed to be downloaded. I used Media download helper but there are others.

You can use an extension called Media download helper or Screencastify to scrape videos.

Alternative methods include using a scraper such as OctoParse or simply create your own using Python (knowledge of coding required).
