Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
UPDATE - October 7, 2016
The majority of issues expressed below have been corrected--though in fact the Feature Option that includes the Sidebar is NO longer listed for administrators. There are, however, a few lingering issues:
UPDATE - September 4, 2016
(So clearly I have nothing better to do on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, but I always want to give Instructure the benefit of the doubt, since I think the majority of us in the Community will agree that they are a good company to deal with, listen to their customers, and have provided most of us a better experience than other LMS companies.)
To be absolutely fair, as the Product Release Notes point out, the new sidebar applies ONLY to Pages and Syllabus. Important areas to be sure, but not to Assignments or Quizzes, to name two important areas where these bugs do not exist because the new sidebar has not been deployed there. That said, I have to report that as of today, the reported behavior of the box file previewer not working with newly-uploaded files using the Upload a new file link under the Files tab on the sidebar continues to NOT work. The file will indeed link correctly, but cannot be seen in box. I tested this using an up-to-date version of Chrome (Version 53.0.2785.89 m (64-bit) ) on a Windows 10 machine.
Also, unless I missed it elsewhere (always a possibility), it was never explained why this "Feature Option" was enabled FOR us rather than being an opt-in feature, as most newer deployments have been in the past.
But, also to be fair, I have not yet had faculty or student complaints regarding this bug, though I also safely say that the majority of our faculty use Assignments and Quizzes much more than they are likely to update/create Pages. (Though I would hope they are using the Syllabus page! Perhaps they have not missed the box previewer yet.)
Despite the title of this Discussion, I have let this option remain enabled since August 27 on our production instance, though I had shut it off previously. Part of my reasoning is we are smaller in size than other Canvas institutions, and I am in a position to turn it OFF immediately if complaints start coming, since I have administrative access.
UPDATE - August 27, 2016
According to the Production Release Notes for August 27, 2016, the information I indicated below regarding the bugs in the new enhanced sidebar were supposed to be fixed in production on August 24. This information can be found listed under the Fixed Bugs for the Rich Content editor, in the File Links section.
While MOST of the bugs described below have been dealt with, not quite all have. You can now upload a file using the Files tab and click Upload a new file and have it link as it used to--both by highlighting the text first as well as simply uploading a file at the end of a sentence. In the latter case, the file name itself will show (as it used to) rather than the word Link, which was one of my complaints.
What does NOT work, oddly enough, is the box file previewing service for the linked file if you upload a new file in Word format directly to any Page. Everything works as it used to when creating a new Assignment. (I have not tried this on Discussions yet.) But if you are creating a new Page, and then click the Files tab and Upload a new file and that file is a Word document, it does not matter if you highlighted text first or simply create a link at file at the end of a sentence. The box file previewer simply will not appear. Below is an example I did at about 10:00 a.m. CST on a new page:
The box file previewer works just fine if the file in question is a PDF. And again, this does not apply to Assignments, where both Word and PDF files both appear with the box file previewer:
I might add, as well, that I noticed with this morning's update that the Feature Option of Use remote version of Rich Content Editor AND sidebar was AGAIN automatically enabled for our campus. This leaves me with a major dilemma because while the vast majority of the features are, admittedly, working properly, it annoys me that it's still not quite fixed....and was deployed.
Hi Folks -
I'm increasingly annoyed with the new enhanced sidebar that is being rolled out and has already been the subject of a few conversations here: Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-08-06) . As @LesleyCryderman pointed out, creating a link in the RCE with the enhanced sidebar, which used to display the file name itself, now displays the word Link instead. I can almost live with that, but what I can NOT live with is one of the great features that Canvas routinely had with links: the ability to preview the file online using the box service. Once the content is saved, while that new Link indeed links to the file correctly, the file previewer icon never comes. I have seen this repeatedly in workshops that I've been conducting the past few weeks.
Secondly--and this was really annoying because I often demonstrate this in workshops--when using the "enhanced" sidebar, you can no longer highlight text and upload a file to have that file linked at the same time. Previously, of course, if you highlighted text and clicked "Upload a new file" under the FILES tab on the right, the file would get uploaded AND the text you highlighted would link to that newly-uploaded file. Not with the enhanced sidebar. Interestingly, the file will still (usually) upload but no link is created. The faculty member would have to know this, of course (there's really no indication that the file uploaded other than double-checking the FILES area) and then re-link the file again.
To be fair, either of the above methods of creating a link works IF the file is uploaded to the FILES area first; links to file names will still appear as is (with the box previewer), and highlighting text to link to a file also works. BUT, this can no longer be done in one "motion," as it were, as it has been able to be done for years using the conventional RCE and sidebar.
Bottom line: unless Instructure is planning to fix this--and soon before the start of the academic year--I would strongly encourage the admins out there to disable the option to "Use remote version of Rich Content Editor AND sidebar." And the frustrating thing is I think this got enabled on its own; it wasn't until I checked the forums and Production/Beta Notes that I spotted this new "feature."
I'm also frustrated--and yes, I realize it is called BETA--that a feature like this got enabled without further testing to see that these things occurred. We have enough issues with faculty members who don't like using an LMS without giving them more reasons to dislike it!
(Oh, and I filed a ticket on this before I realized this behavior was caused by the new sidebar and proceeded to disable it; but I would still encourage you to file something. My own ticket was 01457181--but again, that was before I traced the issue to the new sidebar.)
##End of Rant##
Appreciate the advice and explanation Ken! I am also mystified why this was enabled for us instead of just leaving it turned off and letting us turn it on when we were ready, but I am thankful we can turn it off and everything works the way it should. :smileysilly:
Thank you for this!! I was also having issues in my environment when I was testing this and will certainly NOT be enabling it.
One thing that really stuck out to me as strange was the fact that under the Feature Options, the similar option, "Use remote version of Rich Content Editor" is still tagged as BETA but yet it forced into On. If it's still in beta, then why do I not have the option to disable it?
Hello, Ken,
I looked at your support ticket to see if you had mentioned anything about the Word document behavior originally. I was interested to see that your ticket is still sitting with your support admin and has been since August 16. Our support team would be happy to look into that behavior for you if your admin would be willing to escalate it; I'd recommend replying back to your original ticket with an update about the Microsoft Word files and then asking your admin to send it to Canvas Support.
Thank you,
Erin
Well, that's rather frustrating! Thank you, erinhallmark, for calling that to my attention! I'm going send another email or two!
Hi, Ken,
Looks like our support team identified the behavior and our engineering team is working on it right now. When we have an update I'd be happy to let you know.
Thank you!
Erin
Thank you as always, erinhallmark! Not only for this but for everything you do for all of us to keep us sane!
I can not second strongly enough the outrage at the awful redesign of the RCE sidebar. It looks like it won't be deleted from the BETA, and is going to be made a permanent feature, which is borderline unacceptable. I wrote a long email to one of the engineers detailing the significantly increased difficulty this "new" feature represented, and the reply was "I went through and can understand your concerns."
For the engineers and designers, I'll paste in the email I had sent - I have a project for you to help illustrate how much more difficult editing pages now is.
<< I will attach a screen shot, and then will export the Canvas site I have constructed to see how you recommend the changes I am trying to do with the new layout.
To illustrate how unbelievably poor this new design is, please help me with the following:
I have also attached below the entire export for my Canvas SITE. Could you please create a sandbox for yourself, import this site, and then do the following:
Please edit the following page - OVERVIEW, PART II: THE MIDDLE AGES.
Change the page by doing the following: before the section "Groups and Kingdoms of the Middle Ages," please add the following LINKS: a.) Columbus Day Makeup Lecture (page already exists); b.) Leo, Sermon on Succession (page already exists); c.) an entirely new page titled "Saxons."?
It is preposterously hard now to edit pages and add links, insert links or change links. Please let me know if I have explained this clearly or other ways I can express the issue crystal clear.>>
If I may, I think the most succinct way to summarize the issue is that the RCE sidebar lists should scroll. I am in 100% agreement that scrolling the entire page should not be necessary to scroll through a long list of items in the sidebar. This was the functionality of the previous sidebar, and I see no logical reasoning for removing it.
When testing the new sidebar in a small testing course, the issue is not readily apparent. However, when working in a course with a long list of Pages, as in the above example, the issue becomes quite obvious that the functionality is flawed.
Also it is a bother that the content is not is a logical order either
Robert,
Engineering is also work on this, too. Thanks for your patience!
Thanks,
Erin
Hey, everyone,
Based on previous feedback, engineering is already working on making the sidebar more user friendly. So just watch the release notes for further updates.
Thanks,
Erin
Thanks so much for the update, Erin!
Thank you for the info, Ken. I wish I had seen it a few days ago. We've been battling two separate issues that turned out to be caused by this feature. When uploading a file through the insert content menu, the file structure is lost, so it is difficult to tell which folder is which and which directory they reside in. Secondly, we found that mp4 links inserted into a page stopped displaying the thumbnail / preview link.
We just happened to retest the video link issue after figuring out the feature option was the culprit of the first issue.
In my opinion, a feature in beta should never be turned on in a production environment. It should always be the customer that turns this on.
Thank @kblack for starting this conversation and to everyone for sharing their findings.
I completely agree that this sort of beta feature should not be turned on automatically for production sites - this should be up to each institution plus isn't this is what the test and beta instances are for?
That is my concern, as well, @adam_abbate . I know that other factors come into play with programming these things. Perhaps a third-party provider stops supporting a product, or something is not necessarily deployed to every server farm, for whatever reason. But this seems out of the norm for Instructure to just turn something on like that. And, it's up to the always-responsive erinhallmark (for whom I still think we need to all pitch in and give a holiday bonus to one of these years!) to explain it to the rest of us. I would really like to hear from a higher up at Instructure as to why they thought it was necessary to enable this for everyone by default. It may seem like a minor thing when compared to the new UI, where we had (literally) months to decide whether to turn it on. But nothing is minor during Hell Week the first week of school for many of us.
Hello everyone,
As an update, our engineers deployed some additional fixes to the Rich Content Editor last night. Media and files display inline previews, and embedded images retain the URL, alt text, and dimensions.
As previously noted, this feature was generally designed to only minimally affect the front end of Canvas. Our engineers will be assessing all the resulting behaviors that occurred so they can improve their future processes.
Thanks,
Erin
Hi Erin,
Thank you for the information and updates. I just started investigating this feature option yesterday due to faculty concerns (many faculty with whom I work love Box inline preview). In tests I have done yesterday afternoon and this morning, it appears that one of the functional issues noted by @kblack is still not working properly, namely the preview functions for documents newly uploaded using the content selector. I tried adding a couple new pages with a .docx, a .pdf, and a .m4v file. The previews were created as expected when I used the content selector to insert previously uploaded files, but they did not work for files uploaded using the content selector. Also, the auto-open and disabled inline preview options does not appear in the link options for these files.
Thanks again,
Sam
Just to add on to Sam's point -- it seems that the preview feature is working, but that the proper CSS classes aren't being added to newly-uploaded documents using the content selector. If the "instructure_scribd_file" class is added with the existing "instructure_file_link" class on the <a> tag for documents, the inline previews appear and work. Likewise, the videos need an id of "media_comment_maybe" and a class of "instructure_video_link" on the <a> tag to function as expected. Those parameters don't appear to be added currently with new uploads.
Best,
Lee
Wow--good catch, @lclontz !
Hi, Sam,
Since our support team and engineers do not read posts in the community, would you mind submitting a support case so our support team can confirm these behaviors? It's always best to submit support cases as they'll include information about your environment and Canvas URL.
Thanks,
Erin
Many thanks to Ken, Sam, and Erin!!!
I will out myself as the faculty member who begged the most excellent Sam Timme with help for this and I appreciate both the discussion initiated by Sam which helped us diagnose the problem and Erin's response.
As I said to Sam, I noticed the problem and asked my students whether or not this was an issue for them (as I suspected it was) and they vehemently responded YES. When I told them on Friday (9/2/2016) about the pursuit of a resolution for the issue they were very happy.
We all agreed that the feature (inline preview) is one of the features that makes Canvas a better LMS than our previous one because it prevents the unnecessary and undesirable clutter that occurs with automatic/forced downloading of materials. Many of us in the vast masses are not good about the easy prevention measures that keep those downloads from happening and having the inline preview helps protect us against ourselves.
Now I'll get back to searching the community for how to solve a simple issue with my tables.
Thank you all for your help. This is the sort of discussion that makes faculty feel supported within a larger community of people who want things to work.
Best,
Katrina
Hey, Sam,
We've been looking into this further and I'm not entirely sure the fix the team made applied to document files, which may be why you aren't seeing those work correctly. We've passed on the info to the engineers for them to review.
Thanks,
Erin
I'm still turning it off. I don't really see the benefit here and Canvas support could not even explain what this feature does.
Our experience is that the alphabetical order of pages is lost, but also that the html code of the underlying page shows, sometimes briefly and sometimes it gets stuck there. Turning this option off seems to mitigate both issues.
I was very happy to come across this post as I have submitted support tickets over the last few weeks asking why auto open will no longer work for links, I've worked around this by going into the HTML and adding the code manually, why I can't upload files from the sidebar, and why my pages are no longer in Alphabetical order in the side bar - which today working on a course that has 150+ pages is driving me crazy! So after locating this, I went into my Admin links to disable the "Use Remote Version of Rich Content Editor" but it does not seem to be possible. I have submitted a support ticket - but hoping this might help with a quicker response, and also because since this was never suggested to me in my previous support tickets I am losing faith.
Searching through the pages is literally adding hours to my development time - which is really not making me happy! And having to manually add in the code for files to auto open, upload files before I need to use them...let's just say I could be done with this course if things were working like they did a month ago!
Hi @melissawetherby - Use your Admin link to disable "Use Remote Version of Rich Content Editor AND Sidebar." You are right that "Use Remote Version of Rich Content Editor" is not changeable, but the one just underneath it--with AND Sidebar--should be. At least, it is on our installation (still).
EDIT - Actually, that will not make a different with the order of the PAGES under the Links tab. If I'm not mistaken, that's been an issue for awhile.
Thank you so much Ken! This worked my pages are back in Alphabetical order - which will save me so much time! That will teach me to look at ALL of the options instead of stopping when I don't think I can do what I need to!
Updates for your production environment! When the Use Remote Version of Rich Content Editor AND Sidebar is enabled:
Thanks,
Erin
Thanks for the update, erinhallmark! @melissawetherby -- dare I suggest you try turning it on again? While I do not have a class that I can think of off-hand that has as many as 150+ pages, my preliminary testing indicates that, as Erin mentions, the pages DO now appear in alphabetical order! You may want to give it a try turning it back on real quick. (Perhaps early some morning when no one may notice?!?)
Erin, has the HTML showing briefly or for an extended period of time when this feature is enabled been fixed? Besides the alphabetical problem, that was the other issue we were running into.
Also, maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I still don't really understand the benefit of this feature. If turning it off solves my problems, what benefits do I get from turning it on?
Joe,
I am not familiar with that behavior, but if you've filed a support case, you'll be notified when there is an update.
For the Rich Content Editor, most of the changes are in the backend of Canvas and ultimately improve performance, and some of that behavior resulted in a few front-end changes, too. Ultimately the feature options will be turned on for everyone; I don't believe these will be feature options indefinitely. The team has been trying to roll it out in segments and make sure the backend of Canvas sustains the use correctly.
Thanks,
Erin
Will the Sidebar window be fixed so I do not have to scroll down for ever and day if a I have a number of pages? See attached example. Also do they plan to bring back the able to create a link to page that existed before the update?
We often have 100+ pages in a given course as well. That looks a little crazy to not have a scroll bar.
Hi, Robert,
Yes, they are working on a scrollbar for those sections.
As for the new page link, the previous usage seemed to be very low because it hasn't been mentioned by many people. I just barely found a feature idea for it ( ) so you may want to add your thoughts to that if that link was important to your workflow. Otherwise our product team doesn't know that it really mattered to anyone. The previous behavior wasn't functioning the way it was supposed to anyway, which is why they took it out.
Erin
So, now that the Remote Sidebar feature has been removed, and Pages do again display in alpha order, I am wondering why no one has mentioned (at least not that I've been able to find), that the file list in the Content Selector is not displaying files in alpha order. Curiously, despite the many ways it was problematic, with the "Use remote version of Rich Content Editor AND sidebar" feature enabled (which it still is in our Test instance), the file list is properly alphabetized.
Thank you, Peter! Good point! I just added it at the top. (I've been meaning to update this a bit, anyway.)
The sidebar feature option is still there; it was just temporarily turned off to fix a behavior related to course copies. It's almost done and then will be enabled again. And I'm pretty sure that the engineers won't be spending any time to address the ordering for the current sidebar, as the feature option version will eventually no longer be a feature option.
Thanks,
Erin
I stumbled on this thread doing some research on an issue we're having with the RCE. How are you guys disabling the remote version? I don't even get the option. It would be nice to be able to do this in Beta while I test a few theories.
You are correct! Though as my October 7 update points out, it appears that the "...and Sidebar" option has disappeared altogether. It was the latter that caused most of the concerns. However, if you look at Erin Hallmark's reply immediately above, it's just been temporarily turned off, and it sounds like it will not be an option when it's turned back on.
Thanks,
I guess I missed that as I was skimming. We are anticipating some residual issues from the fixes to the RCS with regard to it using absolute URLs and vanity URLs. I was hoping to test our theory before posting a heads up.
