@LauraRogers5 Whether or not it is possible to sync grades in one Canvas course with multiple courses in your SIS partly depends on the configuration of the actual integration between Canvas and the SIS, but theoretically should be possible.
There are a few things to consider, and you may want to discuss the specifics of the situation with your administration, Canvas Support, and/or CSM before attempting this sort of a structure. Some suggestions and ideas that you may want to keep in mind if trying to make this work:
- Utilize the Canvas for Elementary Homeroom and Subjects structure instead of the "standard" Canvas course structure to ease navigation for students with out the need to cross-list multiple courses containing multiple subjects. Canvas for Elementary is a feature option that has to be enabled by an administrator at the account or sub-account level. More information about it can be found in What is Canvas for Elementary?
- Cross-listing the sections from each of the subject courses into one course shouldn't cause an issue as long as the same teacher is listed for all of the sections involved.
- Assignments should be assigned to only the relevant section to ensure they only appear in the correct subject's gradebook in SIS. For example a Math test would be assigned the the Math section and not everyone so that it only syncs to the Math gradebook in SIS.
- Assignments for each subject area would need to be organized into separate assignment groups for each subject, and the individual assignment groups would need to be carefully associated with the appropriate sections to ensure that assignments and grade sync to the correct grading categories in the correct subjects. For example you may have assignment groups for Math Formative, Math Summative, ELA Formative, ELA Summative, etc and then associate each group with the correct category for only the relevant section/subject and leaving it Unassociated for all of the other sections.
- Total grades in the course should be hidden to students and observers using the option in the course settings and essentially ignored by the teacher as they with calculate the total grade for all the assignments across all the subject-areas combined.
