Instructors often want to use quizzes to give extra credit. This is possible in classic quizzes but is labor intensive in setup and grading. In new quizzes it seems to easy to setup by setting the point value for the quiz at zero and zero points for the questions added to the quiz; however, when it comes to grading the updated point value does not sync with the gradebook. This is going to be a big issue. Any I missing a step? Is this on roadmap radar?
Solved! Go to Solution.
One way to get the grades to sync to the gradebook as extra credit with New Quizzes is to have the Total Points for the quiz to be set to the maximum number of points you want students to be able to earn from the quiz (not zero) until all of the submissions for the quiz have been graded. Once the submissions are graded, edit the total points for the assignment to make it zero and the original scores will be retained in the gradebook but function as extra credit. Editing the Total Points on the assignment doesn't trigger a regrade of the quiz submissions, so as long as the grading is complete this should provide the desired result.
I've struggled with this for years, and the fact that there are dozens of similar queries and responses suggest that creating the function ought to be a priority for Instructure. Shar's very solid 2020 summary laying out different extra-credit options can be found in this response.
Oddly, it seems like a comparatively easy coding design if someone managing development would just prioritize it. Quizzes and assignments already have a checkbox in New Quizzes and Assignments for not including a submission in the final grade (a function I use to create schedule reminders for students). It should be simplicity itself to create a new check box to mark New Quizzes submission or Assignment as extra credit. The challenge is how those scores would be calculated into a final grade. One simple option would be to create a checkbox in Settings to turn extra credit off or on for the course, to toggle/reveal a Gradebook column for a final grade plus the scores submitted which are marked as extra credit. Just give the column background a different color to distinguish it from the required-submissions grade total. That would leave the current coding for the final course grade unaffected but give instructors an option for summing extra credit and reflecting the adjusted score against the required submissions. Just sayin'.
extra credit in a course seems built in to the gradebook already. try this: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-override-a-student-s-final-grade-in-the....

I tired this, and it seemed to work. However, 2 weeks later Canvas converted all the scores to zero. I am back to creating a new assignment with zero points and transferring the extra credit quiz points to that column. I have 250+ students and this is a problem that needs to be addressed by Canvas.
This has been asked (about extra credit \ bonus points) for awhile. What is the difficulty in addressing this? All I see and effort made for a work around. We need a working solution.
