Design issue with Fill in the blank questions

I think there might be a small design issue for the Wordbank option in a “fill in the blank” question type. The problem is that a “Wordbank” box can also act as a “Dropdown” box if a student clicks directly on the box.  If you have multiple Wordbank boxes in a single question all of the options will be mixed together and visible at the bottom of the screen and you can click and drag to fill each box. 

But if a student clicks directly on a single box it will show you only the options that were directly specified for that box by the instructor (exactly like a dropdown box). This means that students who notice that they can click directly on each box will have an advantage over students who click and drag from the bottom of the screen since the former will see a reduced set of options for each box.

I suggest that a WordBank box should never act like a Dropdown box. If an instructor wants that feature they can of course just select the dropdown box option.

I have not done much with new quizzes, so I had to try this type of question out.

I agree with you that the word bank should not act like a drop down if the drop down is an available option.

This type of question is interesting, but I really have no use for it with what I teach.  

I am not sure where this issues falls - a design issue/bug or a feature request.  I looked at the instructor manual page for this type of question and they pretty much gloss right over what dropdown and wordbank are and how they work.

@cvalle Not sure whether you reported this as a bug or not, but I just tested the wordbank question type these many months later.  I suspect the dropdowns, which are still present, are provided for accessibility reasons.  However, the good news is that the dropdowns now include all of the choices in the word bank.  Thus, there is no advantage in opening the dropdowns.

When using the iPad, the drag/drop feature does not work. We did figure out that if student taps in the blank space, they are able to select an option. This is beneficial to our students since they use an iPad.

Hello!  I am excited to direct you to my latest blogpost on Fill-in-the-blank Questions with Multiple Word Bank Choices.  The Word Banks and drop downs work as you would expect.  The drop downs were originally added for accessibility when Fill-in-the-blank questions were first release for accessibility such as keyboard only users who would not be able to drag-and-drop.
