I'm looking to connect with other schools who are using Canvas with standards based grading. We used Learning Mastery this year with a few pilot teachers, but are having difficulty getting it to report out as we'd like. I'd like to hear how you are setting up your proficiency scale, rubrics aligned to outcomes and assignments for optimal use by teachers yet understanding and easy access for parents and students. Thanks!
Solved! Go to Solution.
@ajuelmen , I'm not that familiar with Standards Based grading in Canvas and how it works, but I did a little research and found the following discussions/information that I thought might be helpful.
Hope this helps!

Did you ever get a solution you were satisfied with? Our school is in the same boat right now and I would love to hear anything you found helpful.

Is there any way to access your links? The K-12 Standards link says I don't have sufficient privileges. All the others have been archived. I'm trying to use LMS in Canvas but can't at all figure it out.
Hi Amy -
I'm just starting to use Canvas this semester with my adult ESL program. I'm trying to integrate Edulastic & Canvas, but I'm using the free version (on a tight budget$$ to go to Enterprise right now) so I'm in a little different boat than you are, probably. I've been searching for a similar group of people to figure out best practices for using an LMS & standards based grading as well.
Hi Amy,
Our district and particularly our online high school is transitioning to or using/implementing standards based grading in our schools. However, we've also run into some issues around the issue of the gradebook/learning mastery gradebook not reporting out how we'd like. I'm currently in charge of spearheading the renewal of our ELA online courses to be completely standards based as well, so I'd love to chat to see what has been working for you and what challenges you are facing.

Wondering how standards based grading is working for you in canvas. We have figured out a solution that works for us- while a bit clunky, it allows us to assess and report learning by standards/outcomes. I’d love to compare notes and see how it’s working for you! If interested, please reach out at ajuelmen@pulaskischools.org.
Hi there, We are also using SBG but can't figure out how to get Canvas to cooperate. I'd love to hear what you have done since we have no idea how to integrate our standards into Canvas. Thank you for any insight you can offer.
Hey @ajuelmen -
I support several teachers who use SBG in their Canvas courses. We have looked at Mastery Connect, but couldn't find a way to make it work the way we wanted. We've developed a Canvas-only system that works well using Outcomes for standards, common rubrics, and a mechanism for transferring Outcome reports to numerical grades. I've talked with a few other community members about setting this up and I'd be happy to share more info if you have specific questions.
bbennett2-
Good to hear! We are also in year 3 with SBG in Canvas. We have also created our own system to make it work and would love to connect and share processes. Would you be open to a Google Meet?
Amy Uelmen
Sure. We have some custom tools built that helps with grade reconciliation, but the general structure works well for us. You can send an email to bbennett@elkhart.k12.in.us if you'd like. We're EST and back to school this week, so I'm flexible.
I would love to hear how you are making SBG work with Canvas! The Learning Mastery Gradebook isn't really working for us. This is our first year implementing Canvas, but 7th year with SBG.

Would you mind chatting a bit about your implementation of SBGS? I have often wondered how to handle scenarios where students do not master one or few standards. How does school schedule them working through the standards? We are just starting out. My email is mjuneja@pphs.purdue.edu
I would love to see what you have for this! I am currently trying to figure out a way to set up a gradebook utilizing SBG. I switched from previously only SBG to the old school and as a first year at this new middle school, I have been trying to make it work, but I would love to see how you have set it up! Please let me know if you would be wiling to share!

@bbennett2 we have struggled using the outcomes and the learning mastery grade book at the high school level due to Canvas showing "No Grade" to kids and parents. Also, we have found the student and parent view of the learning mastery grade book to be very clunky with the need for tons of clicks to get an understanding of where a kid is on each of the outcomes, as well as how they are doing "overall".
We'd love to hear about solutions to using the learning mastery grade book and outcomes, too. We have also looked closely at Mastery Connect, but are not ready to take the plunge there...
Any help would be appreciated.
@tom_chambers I have a blog post that explains some of the custom tools we've set up for teachers to report Outcomes as a gradebook grade. Some of it has changed from last year, but the core system is:
Again, there's a lot of nuance in there and I can show you the course setup if you're interested. Shoot me an email at bbennett@elkhart.k12.in.us if you want to set something up.
Oops, meant to link it in the last reply. Here's the post in the Developers group: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Developers-Group/Linking-Outcomes-to-Assignments-with-Python/ba-p...
No worries on being swamped...I think we all are right now!
I would love some specifics on you were able to do this. Thanks!
I teach at a high school that has used SBG for years, but just switched to Canvas and we haven't figured out how to create a grade from SBG in Canvas. I would love to hear what you ( @bbennett2 and @ajuelmen ) have developed. Would you be willing to share?
Thanks!
Andrew
Our school had three weeks to prepare for Standards Based Grading...we have been working real hard! I am definitely interested in how you are using Canvas for this.
@bbennett2 I would love to connect and learn more about how you are doing this!
Hey @mroberts13 feel free to email me directly about setting up a call. bbennett@elkhart.k12.in.us.
I would love to hear more about how you do this as we are experiencing similar issues. What is your contact info?
@ahamiltonwebb @ajuelmen I'd be happy to share, but not this week 😬
If you both send me an email at bbennett@elkhart.k12.in.us, we can set something up.

@tom_chambers , @ajuelmen , @bbennett2 Perhaps we could set up a little presentation from those who are more experts on setting up Canvas for SBG. We could use Meets or Zoom. I need to learn a lot... just getting started with Canvas and SBG this year!

I would be willing to do a Google Meet next week to show you the system we set up in Canvas for SBG. I am available Thursday, August 27th between 8 am and 1:30 pm. I would think we could start with 45 minutes and go from there. If interested, let me know what time works best and I'll send an invite.
Looking at @tom_chambers' response below. I could definitely meet Thursday August 27 at 8am CST if that works with you @tom_chambers and @ajuelmen and anyone else who would love to join!
Please let me know!
Xavier
Excellent! I'm in. Could we start at 8:00 CST (9:00 would be possible, too that works better with other time zones).
Please post the Google Meet / Zoom link and time here and I'll join!
Thank you all for your willingness to help! We are starting school next week but with meetings and PD from 9am on.

Sounds great! I'll send an invite to a Google Meet- please let me know what Google emails you'd like me to invite!
My school email uses Google: xespejovadillo@lantinschool.org otherwise I have my personal email xespejo@gmail.com.
Thank you!

Thanks for organizing @xespejo. Send an invite to bbennett@elkhart.k12.in.us.
Good evening, I just stumbled on this thread after looking for how teachers manage SBG in Canvas and Powerschool. I missed the meeting but would love to get more info on what everyone is doing. I help train teachers here as we just moved to Canvas this year (got it up and running in July). There is a few of us that were on FFT for a few years so knew our way around. But, I am at a loss on how to help our teachers that use SBG. My email is RSethna@d120.org I can also email anyone that is willing to share. Thanks in advance!
