During InstructureCon 2024, I was able to attend a session titled “Re-envisioning Quality and Intentional Use of Learning Technologies: An Everyday Goal at SPCC”. The presenter, Catalina Ramírez, the Director of eLearning at South Piedmont Community College, shared how SPCC made quality the cornerstone during their transition to Canvas in 2022 and how they continue to make quality courses their daily goal. Here’s a recap I made with the help of Co-Pilot for those who couldn’t make it.
The Journey of LMS Migration
The session kicked off with a deep dive into the Learning Management System (LMS) migration journey at SPCC. This migration wasn’t just a technical shift but a golden opportunity to enhance course quality. The speaker emphasized that such transitions should be seen as chances to re-evaluate and improve course design.
Strategies for Maintaining Course Quality
Post-migration, maintaining course quality is crucial. The speaker shared several strategies, including:
- Ensuring Accessibility: Making sure all students can access course materials.
- Course Structure: Keeping courses well-organized and easy to navigate.
- Interaction: Promoting student engagement through interactive elements.
Adopting New Learning Technologies
SPCC has been proactive in adopting new technologies with intention. Some of the exciting tools and methods discussed included:
- Panopto: For creating and sharing video content.
- Digital Textbooks: To provide flexible and accessible learning materials.
- HyFlex Classrooms: Combining in-person and online learning to offer greater flexibility.
Training and Support for Faculty
A significant part of the session was dedicated to the importance of training and support for faculty. SPCC has implemented various initiatives such as:
- Workshops and Open Labs: To help faculty get comfortable with new technologies.
- Learning Liaisons: Partnering with experts to provide ongoing support.
Continuous Evaluation and Adaptation
The journey towards re-envisioning quality in online education is ongoing. The speaker highlighted the need for continuous evaluation and adaptation to keep up with evolving educational needs and technological advancements.
Focus on Equity and Inclusion
A recurring theme throughout the session was the focus on equity and inclusion. All activities and technological adoptions at SPCC are centered around ensuring that every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the session was a treasure trove of insights and practical strategies for enhancing the quality and intentional use of learning technologies. The journey at SPCC serves as an inspiring example for all of us striving to improve online education.
