Y’all ready for a partay? I am! In fact, I’m packing my bags (yes, red nose and floppy shoes included) in prep for InstructureCarn in Keystone, CO. I was going to ask my buddy Josh (Mr. Coates to you, btw) if he’d share an Uber with me, but then I ‘bumped’ into Beth from #stepsforbeth. Turns out she’s going this year!
I missed catching up with her last year. For those who don’t know, days before her flight to InstructureCon 2017, she was hit with a super rare (1%) spinal stroke and was paralyzed from the waist down. Although we didn’t connect, I (along with many of my Canvas friends) followed her every step in her heroic journey back to health.
And just recently, she announced:
“Y'all....I got approval!!! Well 2 out of 4 of my medical team and my boss. With restrictions (i.e. wheelchair and must travel with someone who can assist me...family/friends are going to have to draw straws for this one).”
Of course, this made my giant panda heart happy. I first met <Beth> when she joined the Canvas Community in June of 2015. She’s a sharer (like me) and posts all sorts of goodies in the Community. We connected at InstructureCon 2015. I was just chillaxin’ by the tents, feeling all “kumbayawesome,” when (click!) she took this beautiful picture (Snapchat wasn’t really a thing back then).
We’ve been BFFs ever since.
But, I digress.
In hopes to re-create another memorable photo op with Beth, I will track my #stepsforbeth en route to Instructurecon 2018 (that’s 456.69 miles of dedication!). I’m going to use my paws (and since I have 4 of them, my steps will add up quickly. Sorry, humans) to track each step!
Will you join me?
This year I’ll start tracking my steps in stridekick and I can invite 100 of my Canvas friends to join me, virtually.
Here are the deets:
Can I just say, “I love this community!” (Okay, now I’m going to start crying). But seriously, it’s not just about being Canvas users, but offering up your experiences that end up bringing out your passions, your humanity, and your deep friendships.
See you ‘clowns’ in Keystone!
You are KILLING IT in step counts!!
Darn right I'm wearing Canvas shirts! Sunday I was wearing the same shirt but bright yellow!
Ummmmm...................... @tdelillo , there is no such thing as a "ratty old Canvas t-shirt". There are simply vintage Canvas Ts! Actually, few of the 30+ T's I own have even been machine washed. They are lovingly put away until the next Canvas conference of whatever type. Only time I wear them!
Same with my Canvas hats, jackets and sweats!
I have both the electric pink (like yours) and that electric yellow/lime that Renee mentioned.
Swag season is almost upon us! I'm getting all giddy!
Kelley
@kmeeusen and @tdelillo -- Wore the "one happy camper" #instructurecon 2016 shirt at my kids' camp a couple of weeks ago. In the pouring rain, you still had to smile.
Isn't this the truth!!
Swag season is almost upon us! I'm getting all giddy!
@kmeeusen , I would argue that you're not doing it right Some of my "vintage" Canvas tees are showing the love of many washings. And the elbows are wearing out of my InstCon12 fleece
@tdelillo The InstCon 12 fleece is my all-time favorite jacket swag! Same for my office partner. I wear that one almost every day most seasons! Even last night, I wore it to walk my dog before going to bed.
Yes, that one is getting a bit natty, but it will be coming with me this year!

Yay! I just signed up. Can't wait to step it up
Just returned from a week at Walk Disney World in Florida. So much walking...my legs are sore. But lots and lots of steps. Here are some of the highlights:
July 2 (Hollywood Studios) -- 7.50 miles (18,597 steps)
July 3 (Disney Springs) -- 5.11 miles (13,179 steps)
July 4 (Magic Kingdom) -- 8.14 miles (19,942 steps)
July 6 (EPCOT) -- 11.54 miles (28,145 steps)
July 7 (Animal Kingdom) -- 7.13 miles (17,527 steps)
Hmmm..........................
July 2 - 253 steps
July 3 - 1266 steps
July 4 - 0 steps
July 5 - 1349 steps
July 6 - 1505 steps
July 7 - 2837 steps
At my age, you can guess that those numbers simply reflect the numbers of trips to the bathroom. And for the record, I was not able to hold it all day on the Fourth, I just left my phone on the charger all day.
You're doing great! Pretty much were I am in step counts, so we can be in this together! And yesterday, I barely did anything. Like literally, to the bathroom, back to the couch, to the kitchen, and back to the couch. Sunday seems to be like that after therapy Saturdays.
Having just had a near death experience myself a couple of months ago and still recovering, I felt it would be really appropriate to get involved in this very worthwhile activity. So exciting to see our community come together to support each other. All the best to you @BethCrook as you continue on your recovery journey.
Randy, you have my thoughts and prayers and cheering squad for you as well! Wishing you a full and speedy recovery!
Just seen this - is it too late to start? I'm not coming to Keystone (hope to one day), but I'll walk around Yorkshire for you!
@a_craik , my thought is the more the merrier, but I'm tagging @Renee_Carney on this so she can let us know for sure!
Come join the party!
It's not too late! Set up your Stridekick account and let me know the email you set it up with! We'll get you added!
6,186,546 steps
This is what you all have reached, as of yesterday! We'll be ordering the physical therapy machine soon!
When the 6 million step goal was set we were confident reaching it would be a stretch. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised! Looks like it's time for a secondary goal! Twelve million would be just too easy - so let's up our game and shoot for 15 million! If (or I should probably say when) you hit 15 million we'll have a small celebratory surprise for all steppers!
Thanks @Renee_Carney for the update. This is outstanding! Way to go everyone. We can make it. #stepsforbeth
Can I like this more than once? Or do I need to put in a feature request for that?
LOL
So much WOO HOO!!!!! 15 million for the next goal, huh? #GonnaNeedALotMoreFeet
I just did 3 more laps down the hall to the restroom then I usually do. Might have something to do with all of this water I'm drinking. Gotta hydrate! (I actually do have to drink a lot of water anyways...full Keystone hydration begins next week!)
I find it interesting that they are more than doubling this challenge in the roughest mountainous terrain...hmmmm
I'm not sure what the official count is, but my rough calculation puts us at 9,162,475 total steps as of this afternoon...
This is amazing! Way to go everyone.
I'm commenting so I can be comment #100. And to support @BethCrook , of course! See you all soon!
I mentioned this on the Twitters, but I thought I'd share it here too. With the disclaimer that I am NOT a programmer, I started playing with the Fitbit dev tools and created a custom clock face for my Versa. Still messing around to get the steps to automatically update, but it makes me stupid happy that I even got this far:
Great job! Keep tweaking it & you will get there.
I don't know... I managed to get v.2.0 LOOKING better, but the steps still refuse to update. The Fitbit Community suggestions aren't helping. I am so spoiled by the unending helpfulness of the Canvas Community...
Wow! Blown away! That's ridiculously awesome.
This is so awesome, @tdelillo !!! I love it!
That is amazing, Tracey. You rock!
"Good artists copy, great artists steal"
- Matthew Jennings quoting Steve Jobs quoting Picasso.
Woo Hoo!
I'm down like four flat tires!
Buy new or air them up and keep going!!! We are almost there. #stepsforbeth
Okay, lesson learned about keeping in touch with the awesome Canvas Community. I just joined the #stepsforbeth challenge on Stridekick and have just 7 days to make it to Keystone. From my college Google says it will take 353 hours to walk there, which is only 14.7 days! Unfortunately there are only 7 days left in the challenge, so I'm afraid I might not even make it across Nevada.
Every step counts! Let's just see how far you can get!
If you #stepforbeth, let's gather Thursday (that's today already!) at 12:00pm in front of Decatur field, which is where the lunch tent is. We'll gather and get a group pic! (remote friends, post a pic of what you're doing around this time).
