Whole-discussion activity report

I  somewhat regularly get asked by teachers, "How can I get a holistic view of how much the student participated in discussions in the course?"

There's no easy answer to this. I often refer them to the student's access report, which they can (using their eyeballs) look for lines with the discussion icon to get a sense of it.

Is it in-scope for the discussions redesign to include a report page, like "Show me, for each student, all at once, how many threads they've posted in? How many they've started?"

Ideally, to filter for quality as well, it could be "show all the selected student's posts in all threads". Similar to the current classic discussions SpeedGrader view, but across the whole Discussions area.

Aside, per-thread "graded" doesn't work for this -- that's still too many places to look, and many courses use student-started threads they'd like to include. The "three stars" participation grade is also not granular enough; plus it includes non-discussion activities.

@dkpst5  -  be sure to note that within the New Analytics tool there is a Reports tab. Within is a course Activity Report that lists the number of times an item is viewed and the number of participations.

When exported to csv the file can then be saved to Excel format and filtered, sorted, and aggregated. For example, a pivot table can be created to create a summary report that shows a count of discussion participations for each student.

Thanks. Yeah, that's the info I referred to that's on the student activity report (except going that way pre-filters it by student). Teachers tend not to use Excel, let alone a pivot table to get the data out. The data's there -- getting it so teachers can access it in a useful format is the hope.
