Mark As Read in Redesigned Discussions

Most of the UI changes implemented so far are genuine improvements, but the only one I'm immediately unhappy about that doesn't appear to be a bug is the change to marking posts as read. I have the option enabled so that posts don't accidentally get marked if I accidentally scroll down a page. Hiding the "Mark Post as Read" in the menu for each post is pretty rough on my workflow when I'm reviewing a few dozen posts.

Sounds good @AllisonPittler! From my perspective as a former UX designer, it needs to be one click. It would probably be nice if the UI were a little different when you have the mark un/read manually option selected, and I also would see a strong argument for making it mark as read if you reply.

@AllisonPittler  - if it hadn't been mentioned, there is also an issue where the count of unread posts on the discussion topic list page does not match the reality of what is unread in the actual discussion thread.  To illustrate, this morning I see last week's discussion as having 57 unread replies while in reality there are perhaps twenty.  For the week prior the count shows 17 unread replies while when I go to the discussion and filter for unread there aren't any.  The same is true for the week before that.  It shows unread posts but in reality I've read them all.

Hello Jeff. Yes, this is what I "was" seeing the same thing as @AllisonPittler

I spoke to our Tech Support Team and they referred me to "turn off" the beta testing for discussions which changed it back to its original formatting. I can't tell you how excited I was to do this.

For me, the beta test was not working.

I have run into the same issue: deceptive notice that there are 10 unread posts when, in fact, all of them appear to have been read. I assume this is just a glitch. For me this is happening only in one discussion.

I too like to use the manual mark as read feature.  Two clicks to Mark as Read doubles the work - I hope the old method of clicking on the red "unread" dot to change the read status will be added to the Redesign.

My thoughts exactly! It is much easier to just click the dot to mark a post as read or unread. Why have to double click? once to bring down the menu and then click what we want from that.

Thank you for asking this question. I have three courses going and none of the discussions are automatically marking as "read", e.g. the blue goes away but the number of unread still shows. I have tried numerous times to mark these as "all read".

I have run into the same thing. In the legacy discussion boards, the posts were automatically marked as read if you view them. Now it appears that you have to click the "more options" and click mark as read in order for it to be read. 

Can we get the old functionality back so we don't have to mark things manually?
