It sounds like you're a student. In that case, the tips left by @stimme won't help.
Sometimes what is obvious to instructors (because we've done the same thing over and over) isn't obvious to students who are seeing it for the first time. Sometimes instructors are oblivious as well because we're using a new technology or we don't know what it looks like from the student's perspective.
What is sounds like is that the instructor wants you to indicate that you are present in some way that leaves a record.
How exactly that is done varies greatly, so you may need to read the course syllabus, look around inside the Canvas course, or ask the instructor for clarification.
This is a community of global users of the Canvas software and most of us don't have access to your particular institution or class to know how attendance is recorded.
- Some classes make students take a quiz at the start of every class to indicate they're present. There's a quiz for every day the class meets and it usually opens as the class starts.
- Some online classes using Zoom (or similar videoconference software) ask every student put a note in the chat to indicate that they are there. That goes into the chat log and then they can figure out attendance from that.
- Some face-to-face classes have ways of recording attendance by scanning a card when you enter the classroom.
Those might help you find what you're looking for. But if you cannot figure it out, ask the instructor what they mean.
