View Requirement for files in a module

Until recently, it was possible to put a .pdf file in a Canvas module with a "View" requirement, and my students could fulfill the requirement by simply clicking on that file.  This method worked well for several years, but for some reason stopped working today.  I was told by our campus Canvas expert that it's no longer enough for students to just view a file; they have to actually download it to fulfill the view requirement.  Can anyone confirm that this is the case?  If clicking on a file in a Canvas module is no longer sufficient for students to fulfill a "View" requirement, then I'm going to have to redesign several of my Canvas courses to compensate for this change.  Thank you.

Chiming in to second this. The "download" rather than "view" requirement is really misleading. It would be very helpful for the requirement to either say "download" in modules view, or for it to revert to how it was previously. This is gumming up the works for many of my instructors and students today (first day of classes).

I agree.  This unwanted and unnecessary change is a huge pain.  

In addition to asking "when" this change occurred, I'd like to know "why" it occurred.

I'm sorry to read of the challenge this behavior has created for you! This was an unintended consequence of a change we made recently. Our engineering team has addressed it, and a fix is scheduled to be released on 8/30.
