Varying max grade for an assignment

Hello - I'm looking for a way to vary both the score and the max score for individual students on a classwork assignment. Let me explain:

I want to assign a weekly classwork score for students, worth the equivalent of 3 points a day. So if they participate fully, they'll get a 12/12 for the whole week. But if a student is absent (excused) for one day and otherwise participated fully, I don't want to give them a 9/12; I want to give them a 9/9. Is there a way to do this without having a separate classwork assignment for *every day* (which would be tedious).

Thank you!

An assignment can only have one value for points possible. I would recommend the alternative that you mentioned - making one assignment for each day. Excusing students for specific days will be simple if each day is represented by its own assignment. If you are finding entering grades for each student tedious, you might try incorporating the Set Default Grade option into your workflow. Each assignment column has it in the triple dot menu. If you first give the students with less than 3 their scores, then you can set 3 as the default grade for ungraded students. That could shave some time off of setting lots of daily grades.

How do I set a default grade for an assignment in the Gradebook?

Another alternative to consider is creating a secondary assignment for a given week that is worth 9 points and assigning it only to the students with 1 excused absence. Then excuse them from the primary assignment. How do I assign an assignment to an individual student?

There is not a way to create an assignment that repeats like a calendar event. The quickest way to make an assignment with the same settings as one that already exists is duplicating it. That may help. How do I duplicate an assignment?

The Roll Call Attendance tool might offer desired flexibility and easy of use. It has a partial credit status that is labeled as "late," but you could use it to grant 66% (the default is 80%), and that would be the equivalent of giving 2/3 for less than complete participation on a given day.
