There is no way to get around the locked down videos that are hosted on Kaltura but need you to authenticate with Canvas to watch them. So, if we are trapped in the Instructure UI the least they could do is improve the embeds. Terrible. Either tiny, unwatchably tiny, or full screen which makes it difficult to do other things like go search notes or have a split screen for any other reference material related to what your watching.
Is there a way around this terrible situation?

Hi @ARD2-2,
This likely is more of an issue with how your school/institution has their Kaltura settings configured. The size of embeds offered is totally configurable by a Kaltura admin. So with that being said, there isn't really anything to be fixed form the Canvas/Instructure side. It's possible the school/institution chose small embeds for some specific reason, but it's also possible they just haven't configured them (or not configured them to a larger setting that you would prefer). I'd definitely reach our to your school/institution help desk to perhaps ask about this settings.
Hope this helps a bit!

(don't say "use a second device" I'm not looking for workarounds, I'm looking for validation and, ideally, a fix from Instructure for this issue that is just poor ui design or more likely poor implementation)
