I am a Canvas admin. My test term is set to expire on Oct 29 (2022) and student access is set to expire on Oct 30 (2022). I was surprised to see I am still able to log in as my test student account and access my test course by clicking on the course link under “Past Enrollments” today (Oct 31). Any idea how to set a course to not be accessible after a certain date?
Note: I logged in to Canvas as the student via a login screen, and did not act as a student via the Admin menu.
Thanks for any assistance you can offer!
Hi @Carter41 ...
Curious to know...when you log in to "Matt's Test Drum Course" and then go to your "Settings" screen, what kind of options do you have set around the area of the "Participation" heading? Is that set to "Term" or "Course"? If you have it set to "Course", are there dates in the "Start" and "End" fields that are different than what you have displayed on your "Term" access admin screen? Do you have either of the "Restrict students from viewing..." options selected under those dates?
Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!
Hi @Carter41 ...
Thanks for the additional screenshot. Try selecting the checkbox for "Restrict students from viewing course after term end date". (Make sure to scroll to bottom to "Update Course Details", too.) Then, try logging in with your test student account and see what happens. Keep us posted!
The course is no longer accessible. Thanks! Couple of follow-up questions now:

Hmmm...I think you may have stumped me on the second part of your question. Hopefully someone else here in the Community will see this topic and have a good solution for you. In regard to the first part of your question, the only thing I can find (which you may have already seen) is this Guide:
How do I use the Terms page in an account? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
Do you think any of the info in that Guide helps to answer your question?
Thanks again. That page doesn't really get into access dates but I think this video (at 0:58) is stating that the "Students can access from" field is merely a different term date. So in the course settings, where it states "Restrict students from viewing course after term end date" the words "term end date" may be now referencing the "Students can access from" date and not the "Term runs from" date. If I'm interpreting this correctly, Canvas is a little loose with their word choice and definitions. It's quite confusing!
I'll have to run some more tests and see what transpires, but thanks for getting me closer to an answer.
