Hi all! An organization that I am working with would like to integrate a social networking aspect into their possible Canvas course. They would like to have a community of practice where both current and past students can share discussions, work, and even work on group projects collaboratively from around the world. They are all adult learners. Has anyone integrated this into their Canvas course? Thanks!
@melissa_kreider , are you following https://community.canvaslms.com/people/laurakgibbs/blog?sr=search&searchId=25e0850a-6320-46f0-955d-8...? If you're not, I highly recommend it. laurakgibbs is also doing a series of https://community.canvaslms.com/community/ideas/canvaslive?sr=search&searchId=923b6ba9-e583-456d-9e8... events, starting this afternoon with https://community.canvaslms.com/events/2011-how-to-use-twitter-widgets-not-the-twitter-app-in-canvas....
Thanks for the ping stefaniesanders ... and hello, @melissa_kreider !
I am indeed very interested in different ways of integrating social networking tools with Canvas (my classes consist of student blog networks). I just posted a long comment on a very interesting discussion about persistent Canvas courses for lifelong learning/connecting, and you'll find links there to my Twitter stuff, and also to something called PAINTCanvas which is for a presentation at my school next week about Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, blogs, etc. and other tools that can integrate with Canvas using iframes and other tricks; here's that link directly:
And here's a link to this other discussion about lifelong learning and persistent Canvas spaces:

This is a topic that really interests me and I am glad to brainstorm about it with you; ping me any time here and I will gladly chime in and share what I've learned from my little bit of Canvas experience (this is our first year) plus many years of student blog networking. 🙂
laurakgibbs Nice to meet you! You have a wealth of resources I will definitely dive into! I will reach out once I am able to digest. Thanks, stefaniesanders for making this connection.
laurakgibbs - it was great meeting you at Khaki 2.0! This resource hit at the exact right time! I created a Twitter widget in a demo course that I have and your directions were magic! My team was super impressed with it and I am happy to demo it soon with my client. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing!! I can't wait to dive into the rest of your resources!
Oh, I am so glad that it worked! I am a huge fan of Twitter and being able to bring Twitter into the Canvas space is something I think is really excited. I have a Twitter page in my Growth Mindset thing that I am doing for CanvasLIVE on Thursday, and that's a motivator for me to keep up with that Twitter account: I know that what I tweet there is popping up in the Canvas space too! 🙂
Melissa,
If you are looking for a social media/ social networking tool, I would recommend looking into elgg. This is a great tool and depending on your resources, you can get your IT people to self-host it. I knew a lot of people at the College of Education at the University of Florida who used it and were very happy with the easy of use and how well it can integrate with other LMS.

Hi @jrboek it is so cool to meet up with you here! (I saw from the schedule @keeganlong-whee sent around yesterday that we are both doing PAINT Canvas things next week; that's actually the link I shared above.)
Have you played around with Known? It is a new project that Ben Werdmuller has been working on after developing elgg. I know some people at OU have been using that (like Adam Croom). I used it for my classes year before last, but decided that I liked Twitter better. Anyway, Ben has been doing great stuff with Known, and like with elgg, there is s strong education focus:
No I have not, but I will now go look. Thanks for the info!
John
We are giving the Instructional Designers area a little bit of love and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.
Were you able to find an answer to your question? I am going to go ahead and mark this question as answered because there hasn't been any more activity in a while so I assume that you have the information that you need. If you still have a question about this or if you have information that you would like to share with the community, by all means, please do come back and leave a comment. Also, if this question has been answered by one of the previous replies, please feel free to mark that answer as correct.

Thanks for checking! We went with an awesome tool called Mighty Networks! We can mark complete.
We use Mighty Networks too and are migrating most of our course work into Canvas but would still like to use Mighty Networks some. Were you able to find a good way to integrate Mighty Networks with Canvas?
